Is there a thread that evaluates compactflash cards. I have the 300D and saw the Kingston 1GB Elite Pro for $66.00 with a $20.00 mail in rebate. Is this to good to be true?

Mitch,
Here is the general database for CF testing

Here is the 300D specific section

The report is pretty comprehensive.

I own a toshiba pro card and a Kingston Elite.
The kingston SMOKES the Toshiba card on the 20D it's one of the fastest I ever tried but I have not yet tried the new Extreme III's from Sandisk but seeing the speed of the kingston I don't need anything else, it writes a full buffer with Raw's so fast I can see the counter add up :D. On the 10D I had to wait for a too long time, with the 20D it's lighting fast.

I have a gig. It's served me well. Don't expect your 300D to take faster pictures, however, if you have a USB2.0 card reader, it'll read/write fast.
It's not as fast as the old Ultra IIs, but still plenty fast.

The speed is not so much of an issue as the quality. How do they hold up over time?

I have the 4GB Kingston Elite Pro Compact Flash. Great card - I believe I paid $480 CAN$, 4 or 5 months ago. I can't tell any difference between my 1GB Ultra sandisk and the Kingston.

I just bought two for my DReb. They work fine.

My oldest Kington card (all my cards are Kingstons) has shot well over 15000 shots with no issues before I replaced it with a larger one, it is now used on a dialy basis in my MP3 player, also with no issues.
I have two 1GB Kingston Pro's for my 20D, I notice no real world speed difference between those and the older no Pro cards mainly due to the huge frame buffer on the 20D.
Also Kingtson has always been a premier memory brand (well down here anyway), I have never had any issues with the quality of their goods.

The only CF or MD I've had die was a Kingston 1 GB CF.

How did it die? Did it just pack up?

Bad sector or summat. I'd be shooting along and all of a sudden the pictures wouldn't be there. I was able to get them with a file recovery utility, so it was evidently the sectors being used for the directory that caused the problem. Still, I'm not trusting it for photos. It also took forever to mount in a card reader. The other 1 GB Kingston and my 256 MB Kingston are still working though. But I'm getting SanDisk from here on out.
