I am interested in buying an S40, and I started investigating things about digital cameras. I came across this interesting article at howsutf works, and learned about the two ways that a digital camera uses to register color. I wanted to know if anyone knows which of the two methods described in this page ( http://www.howstuffworks.com/digital-camera4.htm ) is the one used in the S40. Thanks.

Additional to this, I am interested in the general opinion about the S40.

It should be bayer pattern filter I guess. Heard this "bayer' thing a dozen times when I read digicam review at www.dpreview.com, probably applies to popular digicam as well.

Sorry forgot to post my personal opinion. I'd say I still prefer S30 since there are not much increment of resolution (3.1 effective pixel Vs 3.8 effective pixel). In addition you also loses ISO800 option for S40. But if you are still interested in S40, I'll recommend you to get S45, which have more manual control (additional focus bracketing and flash option) and menu layout.

Manual focusing has also been improved that you can see the "magnified" image in the center much more clearly. S30 and S40 are just blowing the pixel out. If you are still not sure, go to camera shop and ask the shopkeeper to compare manual focusing of both camera. You'll understand me.

In that case, wouldnt it be better just to get an s230. I am really concerned about the autofocus deficiencies of the s30-40.

Plus, you said the s40 has only got 3.8 effective, but the canon web site says this:

Effective Pixels: PowerShot S40: Approx. 4 million, PowerShot S30: Approx. 3.2 million

I own Digitual Ixus (first model); S40 and A200.
I am happy with the S40, but I have to say that the colour on the A200 set to "vivid" is absolutely beautiful, and seems better to me than the colour of shots taken with the S40 on any setting, including its "vivid" setting. Does anyone know why this might be or am I imagining it?
