Not sure if I have set something incorrectly when I installed this software, but when I select the night vision option I expect the screen to either dim or go in to 'red' mode. Unfortunately neither of these things happen, and as far as I can tell there is absolutely no difference between night vision mode being on or off.

Even the fly out menus are a nice bright off white, which is hardly conducive to retaining your eyesight at peak night viewing capability.

Has anyone any ideas or suggestions?

I'm testing my SNP and the night vision works. The screen dims, and everythign turns a shade of red. Go into your preferences and make sure that the night vision is set correctly.

File
Preferences

In the drop-down, go to Brightness/Contrast

Make sure the Night Vision levels is set to "Darker"

You can do this with the NV on or off.

Thanks for the tips Katodog. Even though I have tried playing around with the brightness/darkness settings, even setting the night vision slider to it's darkest setting, nothing changes when I click on the night vision button.

When I select a similar option in Stellarium, the freebie planetarium, it all changes to red mode as I would expect, so I don't think it's my PC being incapable of displaying the required colours.

Which version are you using?

Also, Starry Night's night vision won't work on some computers, due to the control it uses on the computer's display modes. It may just be that your computer isn't compatible with Starry Night's night vision mode. I would imagine it would have something to do with what type of graphics card you have.

That would make more sense, as it is quite an old desktop I have it running on at the moment. Initially I wanted to install it on my laptop, but SNP also seems to have issues with Vista.

I've seen some suggestions for getting round that particular problem, so I'm hoping to sort it out on the laptop over the weekend.

Thanks for all your help.

I had the same problem with The Sky 6. The way I solved it was to go to the "Themes" area of the Display Settings and do the "Save As..." any name works, and as I recall, I just used the same "My Favorite Theme".

It had something to do with not being able to modify the settings of a preset Windows theme I think.

Anyway, might work.

Have had a look in the themes, but can't see anywhere that allows you to save a theme as your own favourite. The only save as I can find is in the main 'edit' menu but saving from there and then loading the saved file back makes no difference.

What version of Windows are you on? This is from XP Pro.

Ah, I misunderstood; I was looking for themes within SNP.

However, having tried saving my own theme in Windows XP, I still can't get the night vision to work.

Ultimately it's not a massive problem as this is all on my desktop, which doesn't go outside.

Will see what happens when I load it up on my laptop.

Just an update for everyone. I sent a query off to SNP support, who sent a note back suggesting downloading the latest updates for SNP, which I had already done.

They also stated that my graphics card needed to be capable of 'gamma ramping' whatever that is. As I am running a fairly old PC, I managed to find a driver update for my graphics card, which I duly downloaded.

Suffice to say that the night vision option in SNP is now working as it should.

Many thanks for your help and suggestions along the way.

Good deal! Glad you got it working.
