How big should a portfolio be?

I have been trying to kepp the portfolio size small and the site clean and tidy. But I see many sites on here with dozens of pictures.

Short, pithy answer to your question: Long enough to be remembered, short enough to remain interesting!

Mind some friendly feedback? Stopped by you site and found that the pictures were very different sizes: some were very large and took a long time to download, others were very small, and then some were in between. They also loaded differently: some in their own window - some in the main window? If you are consistant in your structure (image size and placement) it is easier for the audience to concentrate on your message (picture content).
