Fake Wedding Cakes

The cakes are fake, not the weddings!:lol: My wife designs foam cakes that she rents out. I was chosen to be her photographer. This is new to me, so feel free to critique!

Nice cakes.

Lighting is flat.

Try using multiple lites if you have them.

Use off camera lighting if you can.

Try getting your light above the cake just in a little in front of it to make the cake gain some texture.

Set your light about 90 degrees to one side with a reflector on the opposite side (to fill in the shadows)

in addition to the first suggestion - add a background light from below the cake and pointed up on the background with a snoot to add dimension to your shot.

drag the shutter to add ambient light

Try to keep it short and to the point - try not to settle for the usual dull cake shot. She is your wife and is doing an excellent job - your shots could help her bring in the big bucks!

What do they cut and feed each other?

There are a couple of different options, you can either have the top layer real cake, or have a slice of real cake inserted into the second tier on the back of the cake, where it won't be easy to see. A third option is a small real cake hidden behind the fake one.

As to the photos, lighting is a bit flat. Maybe leave a bit more of the cake on one side in shadow? Lose the name cards on the second photo out... Otherwise, nice job! ;)

The biggest reason to rent a cake is cost. Rental is $150-200 vs $1000+ for a comparable real one. Of course, there is the cost of the sheet cakes that are sliced and served to the guests, but it is much more economical. Saves money to hire a great photographer!:D

We did that for our wedding.

Top most layer was real (Cheescake) and the rest was foam.

Guests were served from additional Cheescakes with all the prep done in the kitchen of the Country Club where we had our reception.

I always thought the best part of the wedding was "the getting married part". When I was getting married, I didn't care about anything else. Just wanted me wife. :)
