With fall upon us and winter not far behind - I was wondering where those of you who don't have studios go to shoot if it's really cold. Do you have backup locations that are protected from the weather? What kinds of places have you found that work?

eta that I am specifically referring to portrait photography - families. kids, babies, etc - sorry, I should have been clearer - my kids have not been cooperating with my online time

I live in Los Angeles, it's 80 degrees now during the day and the light is softer as well. So I can shoot outside pretty much all year round.
:)
Sorry, I had to rub it in.

Maybe you can shoot indoors or still shoot outside but just more bundled up? Unlike water, snow is easier on the gear.

Got a nature conservatory in town? They usually have a glass roof.

I kick the techs out of the wal-mart tire & lube express and use their bays.

We do indeed - I'm a member and shoot there (http://montemama.zenfolio.com/p135557971)often. Great fun with my kids! But alas, their rules prohibit photography except for personal use. It's possible that no one would notice a quick session - I've been there lots of times with friends and been shooting pics of them and their kids and no one has ever given us a second look. But technically, not allowed.

When it's really cold, I suck it up, dress up and head out.

I'm a big fan of that - I actually love winter  but I'm doubtful that clients, especially with babies or kids, will feel the same.

I go the same places in winter as I do in summer. These are local places I know and I continue to photograph as there are always new subjects and new light. If its cold I just don't go as long.

If you'd mentioned your subject matter in the first post, this thread might actually have made some sense.

As it is, most bird/wildlife/landscape photographers are out and about as much - and often more - in Winter as at any other time.

Another tiresome example of "what I do is all there is..."

My sincere apologies. I thought I had and now realize I didn't. Time is precious, I was in a hurry; that thought didn't make it from my brain to the keyboard.

I certainly don't presume what I do is all there is. You're right, my OP was vague, but it wasn't because I'm unaware there are different kinds of photography. :)

I understand your pain. One of the reasons I purchased a macro lens was the time between fall and winter. A macro lens can make even the most boring subjects interesting. Still cold as heck outside and not nearly as much fun as shooting in good weather, but this time of year made me look a little harder for things to shoot.

I just bundle up and head out... Actually it's -15 (with the wind) here today and I have a shoot with a model.... Oh yeah... And a big snow storm hit yesterday too.. LOL.. We're still going out to shoot at different locations around town...

There are a lot of studios for rent in my area. You can rent them by the hour (typically 2 hour min). They have backdrops, lights, the works.

Craigslist is often a good way to find them

If you can't find a rent-a-studio you might try contacting local photographers that have a studio and see if they would be willing to rent it to you. With the poor economy I bet you would find several who would welcome an additional source of income right about now.

Well thank you.. LOL...

But when it is cold out (and I mean -35 and more!!!!) there are a few other places here that we can go and shoot at.... One of the churches here just did a big renovation and they have this amazing stair case and front entry that is all glass...... I am gonna try to find out if i can book a shoot there sometime with in the next few months...

If you can't take the cold where I am then you are really living in the wrong part of the world. -40 is a fact of life here and trying to stay inside when it gets cold out just results in many missed opurtunities.

Not to mention there is more to photography than just human models.

Try lobbies of apartment buildings. Get permission of course. But they usually let me shoot as long as I clean up.

really?? i find that weird...

I think i'd like to try that but... I'm going to have to go around trying to see which lobbies that don't have cameras will allow me..

ive been looking into rentals in the nyc/brooklyn area, they are VERY expensive.

Also try looking for office spaces (or little stores) that are currently vacant, sometimes if it doesn't hassle them too much, they will let you work out of the empty office/building.

I hope I can accomplish that. Can anyone help me out.. How would I approach them? What if they want to charge me?

We generally go to clients homes and shoot on location. It can be very challenging at times but typically works out fine if they know in advance that we don't always get a more "posed portrait' style image but more interactive shots. We also use our own homes, and a local Arts venue with very large windows. If you have friends with homes with nice big windows, those can work well. We haven't had a lot of luck with getting families out into the snow, though had one session this year like that. By the way, we don't have a studio at all, shot always on location.

It was -10 with 35 knot winds here Tuesday. So we shot inside a city bus.

Sometimes, I use my garage with 6 space heaters at full blast. Also managed to use a local coffee roasterie, coffee shops, and even (on Tuesday) inside a Subway restaurant. On that last one, the colors actually worked well, but it was critical to make sure there were no sharply focused posters of sandwiches in the background.

I did have serious fogging issues though, going from a couple shots outside to the relatively muggy Subway restaurant.
