OK, my turn for a bag recommendation thread...

I'm currently using a tamrac pro 5. It's close to perfect, but a tad too big with unnecessary pockets. Basically, here's what I want:

shoulder bag
2 "lens tubes"
tall enough for a 40D/5D with a 70-200 2.8 or 100-400 ON THE CAMERA
"lens tubes" wide enough for a 70-200 2.8/100-400 hood reversed on lens
the contents would be:
1 camera (either 40D or 5Dii)
1 long lens (70-200 or 100-400)
2 short lenses stacked in the other "lens tube" (typically the 17-40 and 24L or 17-40 and 15FE)
camera would either be on the 100-400 or one of the short lenses on top of that "lens tube"
camera strap on camera
RRS L bracket on camera
NO GRIP! (so the bag only needs to be as wide/deep as a 40D/5D body or the 100-400 hood, whichever is thicker)I currently have the tamrac pro 5. It's inside dimensions are close, but not perfect (it's a bit wider than just 2 "lens tubes", it's basically 2 "lens tubes" AND a "flash tube" (so 1~2" too wide). It also has a very large pocket on the front I don't need. My biggest 2 complaints I have with it right now are the lid (zips and 3 clips, it's just clunky) and the strap always seems to be twisted and it doesn't have swivels....

here you can see how it's got 3 "tubes", I only need 2

here you can see the lid with it's velcro, zip, AND 3 buckles, also notice the strap:

Bags I'm considering:

boda (http://goboda.com/) (but too expensive)
Think tank UD30 (http://www.thinktankphoto.com/feature_cat_slide_pop.php?ftr=UrbnDsgs_UD30_1) (anyone have pics?)
crumpler 4 million $ home (https://www.crumplerbags.com/flash/flash.aspx#/english/product-details/4-million-dollar-home-md0404a.html)
patagonia single shot (http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/product/product_focus.jsp?OPTION=PRODUCT_FOCUS_DISPLAY_HAN DLER&catcode=MAIN_FA_US.CLOTHING_GEAR.PACKS/TRAVEL_GEAR.PACKS&style_color=48870-681&patcatcode=OTHER_PRODUCTS&ws=false) (with some sort of DIY/domke inserts)
think tank skin double wide (http://thinktankphoto.com/ttp_product_pu_skinDW.php) (somehow converted to a shoulder bag?)
army surplus store bag with inserts...my issue with DIY and inserts is DOMKE inserts won't fit the 100-400 hood... They're too narrow. My other idea was to use 2 specific lens cases like the lowepro sliplock or think tank "whip it out"s in a DIY bag. The think thank UD30 looks pretty close to perfect for me. The other idea I had was think tanks skin double wide converted to a shoulder bag somehow...

HELP!

suggestions?

Think minimalist, out shooting bag. Basically it should comfortably house 2~3 lenses while shooting, then be STUFFED if I put the body in it. I don't need much room for accessories. Maybe enough room for a CF card or two and a 5D/40D battery, but LESS SPACE than that tamron front pocket.

Thanks.

I use the Domke 720-230 insert to hold my 100-400 or 70-200 2.8. It's a 3-compartment insert though and you don't want those. The 720-220 might work; ISTR using it in my F-2. Or check out the Domke F-3x and use a piece of closed-cell foam as a separator between the lenses. There's enough give on the F-3 due to its not having a zipper that it'll take a body with mounted 70-200 or 10-400 no problem. It'll even coexist with the 24-70 2.8.

This has a bunch more than you're asking to carry:
321748

Unpacked:
321749

Because the bag's canvas not padding, the pockets aren't big and bulky when empty. For the photo I had the flash and 15-30 Sigma in the outside pockets.

4MDH won't work the UD30 is about as big as the Pro 5 I believe. The UD35, I believe sounds like your best bet. It's the only bag that seems to be what you described and it came after I did my DIY bag, not like I'd spend that much on it. The Patagonia one looks like it'd work too, but I hate getting bags like that without seeing them.

It was the only bag out there save that Pro 5, but it even seems a bit big. There's nothing else Tamrac offers just a size smaller?

isn't the UD35 is bigger than the 30??

Urban Disguise 30 9.25” L x 10.25” H x 4.25” D
Urban Disguise 35 10.0” L x 13.25” H x 4.25” D
Skin Double Wide 10” H x 10.25” W x 3.75” D
Tamrac Pro 5: 9" x 10.25" x 6.5"

so, it sounds like the UDs might be slightly skinnier in terms of bulk, but they're designed to hold the same thing (2 "lens tubes" and a "flash tube").
