I need to take nice artistic pictures of rings and earrings.

No shadows, and also different backgrounds to suit the ring...

Do you have any experience in this?
Any tips?

My recommedation is get a light tent. Have light source from both side, above and the rear. And to make it interesting you can put semi-reflective surface under the jewelry you are shooting. Have fun.

If you have a star filter, you can make that extra shine.

What lens should I get?

Would 50mm macro be enough, or should I spring for the 100 mm?

Thanks

I do it two ways. I use my 24-70 alot of product shots. And when I need to get up close, I throw in my EF12 extension. Or I use my 50mm with the EF12 extension if I want a really dreamy bokeh.

I guess I could use my 180mm, but I would be pretty far away..heheh. I havent' tried that.

I also have close up, but I never use them on products. Since you want the sharpest image, without any distortion.

100 and, depending on whether they're studs or dangly things, maybe a set of tubes as well.
