Anyone found a good way to find empty spaces to use as a makeshift studio? Something that you could rent for the day?
I'm looking for a place in Buffalo, NY and have run out of avenues. Cant think of a place that you could rent for a day.

lol. Did that..found 2 that would answer but both want 500+ for 8 hours (i could just go rent a studio apartment for a MONTH for that much money).
Was looking more for ideas on what other type of stuff i could look for that would suffice (like a warehouse, etc)

(like a warehouse, etc) I thought of that, but they might have insurance/liability issues, but you might be able to work a trade for prints of it to the owner?
It would be nice to know just WHAT you need to shoot & HOW MUCH room you'll need?
Would a school gym work?
Snow on the ground can provide good light and a nice white background.

Or you can just take the background out:
Need to remove a background from something? (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=82876)

Its going to be for a cover shoot for a magazine. 5 band members +2 photogs plus gear needs to fit.
Also, the band is not from around here so they aren't going to be prepared for an 8 hour outdoor shoot...haha (its gonna be 30-40 degrees tomorrow with snow/rain mix).
I got through to another photographer and he said he would rent his studio for 300 for the day. Think that's what I'm going to be stuck with at this point. Didn't have much time to set this up.
I thought of a gym also but being a weekend/sunday, not really a way to get in contact with anyone about that.
Thanks for the help!

Check your local craigslist too.
I know near me there are a couple places that rent for the day and the cost is way below 300, try closer to 150-200.
Good luck!

Craigslist and google and yellow pages are all dead ends.
Buffalo sucks because the economy is so crappy. There's only 2-3 studios that rent and charge a ridiculous amount cause they know there's nowhere else to go.
I think I have found a studio space...waiting on a price though.

I got through to another photographer and he said he would rent his studio for 300 for the day. If he includes some lights, that would be a great price in Detroit.

We ended up paying to use the hotel conference room.

Bill the studio cost to the client. If you aren’t doing that you’re running your business wrong. $500 sounds about right for your neck of the woods. Go into New York City and it will be closer to $1500 for a day. Whatever you do make sure you are going to be insured.
