D3X has been shipped to testers world wide.
It's a 24MP camera geared toward ultimate IQ. (Likely same sensor as in Sony A900, maybe with small modifications)
Nikon worked hard on the IQ aspect of this camera especially because of gray cast/WB issues with recent cameras.
High ISO performance would be less than that of D3 (although not sure) but low ISO IQ would be better.

16 bit colour instead of 14? Those will be big files. Should mean great detail in the shadows as well.

I can tell you, I am loving the switch. Canon will have a special place in my heart. Really loving my D3..
Still have XTI for the wife. Canon definatley has the consumer level bodies wrapped up, I dont feel Nikon has a competing body in that realm.

If I can swing this 24 megapixel monster, I will. :) I really don't mind doing a switch since I'm not loyal branded. I'm glad you're happy with the switch. :)

After reading the specs I'm excited! :) A FF with everything I've always wanted.
5fps @ 24 megapixels.
7 fps @ 10 megapixels in crop mode.
ISO range 50-6400.
This is where I def. see a real reason to use DUAL CFs due to the large 24 megapixel files!
I am certainly drooling now! :):D

I got the 50D. It's 15.1MP. I have 18MB raw files now. Sigh. I'm happy for all that, but definitely need a new external HD, probably 1TB.
So, 24MP..... i'm sooooo glad high capactiy external storage is so cheep now a days.

A number of TB HD's are now on sale. I've seen internals going as low as $89.95.... you just have to search the ads. I buy external enclosures - Vantec makes an excellent unit that will hold drives - and then purchase internal SATA's when they go on sale.

Interesting to see how D-lighting works. Too bad Canon is few steps behind

Are they saying here that they've found a way to boost really dark shadow detail and also "dampen" down overly bright highlights so pixels aren't lost in blown areas? That would be pretty neat if it's really the case.

According to Dpreview that is the case. Its totally different story how it will work in real life
Active D-Lighting — reproducing brightness as you see it
In settings with strong contrast, Active D-Lighting, used in combination with 3D Matrix Metering II, determines an exposure by utilizing a gradation of highlights, detects lost shadows, then reproduces them after digital processing. Rather than simply expanding the dynamic range, Active D-Lighting prevents images from looking flat through localized tone control technology, and creates realistic contrast while compensating lost shadows and highlights. Choose from Auto, Extra High, High, Normal, Low or Off setting prior to shooting.

Well, maybe yes maybe no - it depends on how well these features really perform out "in the field."

I agree - in some ways it almost sounds like some of the effects people achieve with HDR... some of which looks spectacular in an artistic sort of way, and other output which looks really funky and wierd.
If it's an effective feature that you can turn on or off then it would probably be usefu.

Finally Nikon caught back up to Canon and maybe surpassed them a touch. What did it take 10 years? However it is really not that much better then a 1DsMkIII for studio or landscape work, but for a general purpose camera it appears to be slightly superior. When the examples come out we will be able to tell for sure.
Curious if the 12-bit mode is required to use the higher FPS rate in DX mode, like the earlier D3.

yeah, noink has finally caught up to canon.
seriously, canon did this long time ago, it's called the 1ds...mk1,mk2,mk3... soon mk4...
and guess what, they FINALLY have ISO100!!! oh no! gasp!!!
noink d3x is like sony a900's cousin.
now watch canon bring out some 30 mega pixel monstrous beast with dual digic 4 and stuff. just to make them catch up again. im talking about the 1ds4, of course.

Who is catching up to who again?
Looks like a good camera. Above what I need or want, but good for the Nikon guys.
1DsMkIV must be coming out next year I guess.
On another point. It seems to me, the quality of digital cameras is getting insane. In 10 years ISO 25,600 will be like ISO 400 today. And people will be complaining that the 5DmkV (going by about a 3 year span between releases ;) ) only has 90 focus points and 20fps.
Oh and the MP race will reach insane points... like 90MP or more (but people will still print them wallet size. )
Nice work Nikon. You are close to the 1DsMkIII now. Pity Canon are going to trample you with the 1DsMkIV... (I'm such a fanboy)

iso 3200 is noisy with poor gradiation and 1600 has some motion blur so I wouldn't know. Car shots are probably the worst "top of the line camera" review shots I have seen in a while but they do show astonishing detail

Canon's 5D Mk II has D-lighting, although it is called something else.
For raw shooters, it does not matter.

D-lighting is post-processing, mapping 14-bit raw down to 8-bit jpeg.

The car shots don't show any more detail than I'm used to getting in the 1Ds mark III. I'm telling you, the 1Ds3 is purely INSANE for picking up minute detail. So far, I don't find this D3x to be any kind of leapfrog over the 1Ds3. More like, Nikon has finally put out something that is COMPARABLE but certainly not hands down better (if at all). I don't see any reason for canon to expedite the release of the 1Ds mark IV based on this and the Sony.
I'd definitely like to see more 1600/3200 shots from the D3x because so far, those sample pictures look a lot WORSE than the 1Ds3. They are really crappy pictures and probably don't do the D3x justice. If anyone has any more links to sample pictures please post them up.

Here we go with the pixel peeing again. These are probably right out of camera and could probably use a bit of edtiting. Just like the 1Ds 3 files out of camera it needs a bit of editing to get it the way you want.

I believe you but for someone used to 5D files the amount of detail is very substantial. If you asked me I couldn't care less for such a huge file. 14 bit, 16MPix, FF sensor with large photodiods would be my perfect camera.

Well, guess what. Someone buying camera that is getting so close to the medium format teritorry most likely needs that much detail and most likely wants his pixels to be worth each and every penny paid for them. Such huge files usually go through extensive PP work were quality of each and every pixel matters so yeah, you do pixel peep cameras of that caliber.

Of course. If you own the 1Ds III than most will know you have to PP them heavily. :)
