Just playing around tonight, I took quite a few shots, and this is the one I like the best, though I'm not totally satisfied with it.

Another one, bright background this time

...there is some dust on the glass, but otherwise nice. Also, do you have a non cropped shot?

I like #1 - interesting effect; something you don't see everyday. That's the great thing about digital - experiments that would have been prohibitively expensive with film and paper spend your time now ;). - Stu

Yeah I know there is dust on the glass... One of the things I wasn't happy about when I got to actually looking at the pictures. I don't have any that are non-cropped. I should have grabbed a picture of my setup, but the limits of my current setup meant I needed a tight crop to keep a fairly blank background.
Number one is my favorite. I took it in complete darkness, with he shutter open for about 6 sec. and triggered my external flash hand holding it above the glass.
Now I realize I probably should have worn a black shirt or something so I don't reflect in the glass.

J, I don't feel the dust ruins it necessarily. It's still a nice effort. You can easily clone or "heal" those dust spots out.

I will have to do that. I just haven't sat down to clean it up yet. I'm hoping to get a lightbox for christmas. If not I will need to do make one later

J, you just said the majic words: lightbox . If you are the handy type I have a terrific suggestion for you.

There is a terrific thread - one of the best that I have seen here with excellent visuals and tips - on how to build your own lightbox for just a couple of bucks.

I recently had to do some small product photography and these posts gave me all the info I needed..... saved me a pocket of money ;).

Yeah I saw that thread.. Very cool... Though I may try to make something a with a little more structural integrity than a cardboard box. I am thinking maybe spending a few dollars more and cutting and painting a Rubber-maid container or something similar. A white or translucent one should provide plenty of diffusion. I think.

I think that's an excellent plan - I was in a hurry so opted for a cardboard box, but you're selection of more durable goods would be the way to go for longevity.

I also just used a couple of cheap desk lamps which were fair.... had to jack up the IS0 to compensate. But this type of box also works well outdoors if weather permits, softening harsh sunlight. Make a visit to Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond, your local hardware store or even Sears. They have some great containers that can be modified.
