View Full Version : Getting good snow shots

It was -19 Celsius this morning and the sky is clear blue with white clouds. The snow looks great and fresh. I've tried a few snow shots today, but want to take more this weekend. Anyone got any good advice on how to take snow pics?

Yeah I was wondering as well. But I'm more interested in photographing falling snow.. I was trying to capture the flakes as they are still in the air, but no luck :(

How? you mean like exposure, or like subject ideas? Exposure, open up 1-1/2 or 2 stops so it's white, not grey (a little less if you want details in the snow), and allow for (on sunny days) extra blue from sky reflection.

Falling snow - either backlight it or maybe bounce a flash off it. Longer exposures would also help letting you see the falling flakes (and distinguishing them from sensor problems) by letting them streak.

I would add to Jon's comments by calling it exposure compensation. For real fresh, white, reflective snow, use about +1.5. As the snow ages and gets cruddy, use less, but generally at least +0.5.

The shots I took yesterday I used +0.9/+1 I think. It came out pretty good. :) That's mainly what I was wondering about, but if you have ideas for subject ideas, bring them on!

What camera are you using that you have exposure compensation in tenths of a stop?

Bob, eh I might have read it wrong. LOL It's the stop before the +1. :o Got the DRebel.

I think on the Digital Rebel, there are three marks to each stop. So, if it was one mark before the +1, then that would be plus 2/3 of a stop.

I've only seen one camera that deals in tenths of a stop, and that seemed a little excessive at the time.

Bob,
Yeah, It's three steps if I remember when I last checked. Geesh, you can tell I'm not used to reading that stuff, right? lol

I posted some of the snow shots I took in the nature category.
