This photo is from inside the original state capitol in Frankfort, KY. Replaced many years ago by a more modern building, this one now serves as a museum. The young architect (this was his first commission) included a design for self-supporting stairs. No mortar was used, and the stairs were not attached to anything, not even the wall. The well-engineered stairs were held together only by gravity working with their unique notched design. (The hand rail was added later.) No one was willing to walk up the stairs until the architect himself had proven their strength.
