I just had an idea, so shoot me if its a bad one, or if itys been dealt before :/
What if I was to get myself a grey card, take a picture of it to display on my monitor, and fine tune the monitor by holding the card against the picture ?

<bang> you're dead!
And who's to say that the picture of the gray card is going to be truly gray when it comes out of the camera? ???

Plus monitor calibration involves the colors as well as gray.

Yup, that's what I was thinking.
You could maybe adjust your brightness like that, but that's about it.

To get a good gray (as if there's such a thing as a bad gray  ), you have to have the other colors calibrated in the first place. Gray is an equal mix of RED, GREEN and BLUE. ;)
