Hi Pekka and the rest of the EE community,
I just saw the sticky post about uploading images in a zip file and I think that is a great feature to have. It made me think about the possibility of adding photos to an exhibition or even creating a new exhibition and adding photos just by sending an special email with attached zipped photos to the photo system. It seems that this would not be too hard, but maybe I'm over simplifying it in my mind. I think the biggest issue would be having to setup a special email account for the system to use and check. I searched the forum for previous discussions of this but didn't find anything.

I know you have a lot of other important features/priorites you are working on for EE, but it would be great to add this as well. What do you think Pekka? What about everyone else, what do you think? Is this something that would be valuable to you?

Best regards,
Kd

PS: I just finished a new install for a friend using the latest beta and everything went perfectly smooth and I love how much more that system has been polished since my last install. Many thanks Pekka, your system is truy amazing!

Hi kd,
I think your ideal may sound good, but the email systems were never designed to transfer large amount of files. Lot of email services have a limit on the size of an email being sent. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) on the other hand, is designed and is most commonly used to download files from a server using the Internet or to upload files to a server. It's just a better protocol to use in this application.

I have a high speed cable modem and use FTP to upload my images to EE’s “UPLOAD” directory to get them there. I don't zip them because it is an extra step and would take more of my time, where just using FTP to transfer them in the background is easier for me.

I worked as a Information Technology Engineer for more than 10 years.

Yes, I do agree that FTP is best suited for adding images, I use it all the time. The advantage here would be that you could be anywhere and add an image with a simple email, say you already processed it and resized it. This would be great for doing something like a "picture of the day" type feature. Also it would allow having a shared gallery where friends could easily add their own pictures when they don't have an FTP program or don't know how to use one. Most of the time people will have small images anyways so the load on an email system wouldn't be that big. I know with most pop3 accounts you can have at least a 2Mb+ per email and many systems allow much more.

Thanks for your input.
