Pre ordered the XT with kit lens, 50mm f1.8 and the Tamron 28-75 f2.8.
Should I ditch the Tamron AND the kit lens and get the Canon 17-85 IS??? It is a slower lens, and the IS won't help moving subjects (my kids play sports) but the focal range would make it useful 95% of the time. I'm starting to panic thinking I made a mistake. But, I can correct it if I act quickly.
Thanks for your help!!!

My gut feeling says no.

Keep the 50mm and the tamron, I certianly would. The kit lens covers 2/3 of the 17-85 range and if you shoot any sports then the faster lenses will be beneficial!

It depensd on what you're shooting. I returned a Sigma lens that was F4-F5.6 or so because it was too slow to shoot in anything but bright daylight, i'm all for fast lenses.

The kit lens is good because it's a cheap wide angle. The Tamron is good because it's fast and good quality. The 50mm F1.8 is good because it's very fast, though not fast enough for me some times. The 17-85 would be a great daytime walkaround lens, though when it starts getting darker or if you want to take photos of something thats moving you may be out of luck.

I guess that doesn't answer your question. For me, the Tamron and kit lens is a better combination than the 17-85 IS.

Yes, that DOES answer my question. I tend to like natural lighting, so the faster the lens the better! At least I feel better now.

I was going to order a Rebel T2 (film) and those two lenses recently, but I am holding off since my 300d has to go in for service and Im not exactly sure what is going to come of it :-\

I think your lens selection is good - no worries.

Not that it was needed any more, but I think exactly the same way and ordered accordingly.

Have not regretted it anytimes ... in fact, the Tamron is so sweet, it stays on my camera nearly all the time.
My kit lens is no slouch either when stopped down to f/5.6.

Best regards,
Andy
