serious problems with Canon connectivity via USB

hi all,
just wondering whether anyone has any suggestions how to resolve the problem i'm experiencing with my digital camera

i have Canon IXUS 500 and the image transfer was working smoothly till [i think] i upgraded to XP SP2 (from SP1). now when the camera is connected it only brings up a popup window asking to select an application for image download but the list is empty. ZoomBrowser does not recognise the camera at all, however the LCD on the camera goes blank when it's connected via USB, as it always was

i've installed all the recent WIA drivers from Canon site as well as the new version of ZoomBrowser but got the same story

i even went and cleaned up registry from all Canon-related entries, including the Canon USB section under HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Enum/USB and then reinstalled everything from scratch - still same issues. i enabled trace message to wiadebug.log but couldn't find any error there

checked entries under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer\AutoplayHandlers\EventHandlers\ShowPicturesO nArrival - there are few apps there including Canon's CameraWindow

the USB cable works fine as i can connect my Sony camcorder with the memory stick and download images

any suggestions apart from uninstalling SP2 (i have a sneaky feeling it's not going to solve the problem) or buying a memory card reader would by much appreciated

I have SP2 insttalled and haven't had problems. Have you tried uninstalling everything (the Canon software) and then reinstalling them again, including the drivers?

I agree with Leo.

The Canon software may need to get re-registered with the operating system. The best way is to de-install Canon first, reboot, and then re-install it.

yes i tried Canon software uninstall/reinstall after the SP upgrade but nothing has changed...
