will work with a Canon XTi?

1) You can test the voltage.
2) You could do a search .

I have one that I use on my XT , you should be ok there is a compatibility list posted here.

There is a new version of the Vivitar 285HV that has a sync Voltage of about 5 Volts.

There is an older version of the Vivitar 285HV that has a sync Voltage of about 15 Volts.

There is also a Vivitar 285 (note no HV designation) that can have a sync Voltage of 6 to 500 Volts.

The XTi will accommodate up to 250 Volts on the sync circuit.

So, the Vivitar 285HV old or new will be fine, and SOME of the Vivitar 285 (no HV designation) are fine, but you must test your individual 285 (no HV designation) to know which way to go.
