Besides the battery that comes with the camera, are there any other battery options for the S 40?

Try The Battery Barn.

Hope this helped. ;)

As MacGordan said, battery barn is a good place for alternative batteries, and I got mine there too.

However, the higher capacity batteries are not suitable for all uses. The higher capacity batteries work fine on land, but if you bring them underwater, the extra heat they generate tends to fog up the underwater housing.

Still trying to find a workaround to this issue.

You can also find 800mAh version from sakar at www.buydig.com under s30 camera, accesories for it but ex.

I have been thinking of stacking 2 nokia battery together (3.7V+3.7V) to reach the required voltage level. But I'm not too sure what they use the middle terminal for (got +, - and T) at both nokia and canon battery. Some said it is protection terminal, but nobody sure about it. If it is possible to stack them, it is possible to reach a very high capacity NB-2L (2 3.7v nokia battery at 1250mAh rating). Have anybody tried this before?

Thanks for the link Dr. Mac. I ordered one last week. They shipped fast, sent the correct battery and it works! What more could you ask for.
