A quiz of sorts . . . it is in the right section, but is perhaps something not many have seen close up. Or perhaps you have never thought of this at all? I will take your guesses for a day or two and then if no one can answer it correctly . . . I will reveal the truth of the matter.
Who said you can not learn stuff on the Internet? Let the games begin!

So, how did IanD know it was an elk and not a deer?

The hair is a little thicker on an elk. As well, the redish colour is more elk that whitetail/mulie.
I've spent too much time chasin these critters around:):):):)

So $20.00 U.S. should cover it then . . .

I knew Ian would get it right away. No one knows elk as intimately as he does. Furthermore, I suspect he plans to eat all 36 dishes of poutine himself.

Well we have some deer still with a horn or two but the moose are off, the elk are soon to be all gone and I don't expect our local deer to last past the middle of the month.
But, then we get to grow them all again!

It is just a fact of life . . . the horn pad, and one I would suppose not many have seen, even from far away. So it is just a part of the natural cycle and perhaps just a tad 'different.'
Send your address and I will forward CND Ian . . . you are good, but then I should have known this. Perhaps a teaching post for the rest but I would have thought Dave to have known as well.
Regards all.

RJ,
Hold on to the loot and you can buy me a Rockey Mountain version of a poutine the day I decide to invade Tin Cup. The area looks so damn beautiful. A must visit local.

OUCHIE.
Wonder if it hurts the animals when their horns (JUST KIDDING>>ANTLERS, I know) fall off?
Or is it like when a child loses a baby tooth?

Ian is the Elk expert here . . . I just look at them, nothing else. The fibers you see are the blood flow to the horn. They stop supplying blood to the antlers and they just drop off. I don't know if it hurts, I can't imagine it to be too bad however, more an irritation from the change than a 'hurt.' Thus when they rub them . . . much like a tooth, they just fall off.
Has this shot been shown before? I wonder how many folks have seen this? My guess is not many. Thought not a 'good' picture, it is interesting for some and fun for me.
