Aloha, welcome to Honolulu's POTN Hale(house).
The first thread I started was for a meeting to get to know each other and photograph a landmark. It is also the center of discussion and is increasing in size. I started this thread so I can link all the meetings we have and continue on with general chatting without increasing our photograph threads.
This thread is not restricted to Honolulu POTN members, so everyone is welcome to chat whenever you want. We have exceeded 10K posts and was transferred to our current thread. Here is the Honolulu POTN Hale's original thread. (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=302787)

Chrisblaze, I was actually looking to see who built their flash website strictly on their own using flash cs3/cs4 and wrote their own actionscript. I've got a decent understanding of flash cs4, but i wanted to see how much actionscript i would have to learn to make a full flash site. the only problem with doing that is the lack of html to be tagged by search engines. i may just end up making a flash introduction and using dreamweaver to build a html site. possibly use iframes to enclose everything.

Congrats on 10K posts, the Honolulu Hale is pumping! I did notice no threads going beyond 10K. Some was actually moved to a different section.
Wendo - Awesome shots as usual. With your exacto technical mindset, I can imagine the time it takes for you to make one card.
The EOH meet's guest speaker is a PJ and it was very interesting. She had to sell herself when she moved to Hawaii, but had credentials prior to coming working for NY Times and various media companies. She graduated with a PJ degree.

Pics were given out but only those featured in the slide show that I got asked to make because the league hired a photog to shoot league games and I wanted to make sure I didn't take money out of his pocket. Also, I assured the photog that I would not sell or give out any other photo's of our team's games that he and I shot on the same day as a courtesy. However, parents on the board did ask me to make the slide show for the season ending banquet, so it wasn't like I was purposely trying to take business away from the photog.
Does the name "phocalphobe" have a certain meaning?

Nope it was pulled out of thin air while I was in the act of registering into this forums.

Yeah, it's like I'm aware that everything I produce speaks to the quality of work I expect out of myself, and what can be expected from me if I do get hired for a private shoot. So I try to give most projects my best shot, which, ain't much, but it's all I got.;)

norris my critique for this photo is that the car needs some separation from the background. perhaps using a flash as rim lighting would be cool. separating the car from the dark sunset scene would've made this image even better. very cool though. i love the idea.

Thanks for the C&C, so to separate car from the background I would position a flash between the car and background? By moving the car farther from the border, would this help as well? Another Idea I had was to put a flash underneath the car lol...

I'm probably gonna pick up 2-3 SB26s also. i have a 580, 430, and just found a 540ex at home so i'll be set with 2 sb26s i think.

These are the stands (http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101-light-stands.html) I have but are not manufactured under that model anymore. Read the alternatives on the article for cheaper stands. I have 43" Wescott compact umbrellas that are shoot-thru and reflective. Read the Strobist articles on the above link for great tips on stuff to get.
EDIT: The links are on the bottom of this article (http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101.html).

You can try a few different materials. Parchment paper might do pretty good. WalMart has a material that looks like it would work very good, but don't remember what it's called. When I go back, I'll write it down. IIRC, it was about $1.75/yd.

Thanks Chris. I shot these photos after Noah was born. Actually, on November 26th. I just used two reflectors to get the shot of Noah. A gold reflector behind of him and a sunfire reflector just below him to the right of the photo. All from window light. He makes a good practice model!

I never thought of using parchment paper. I just bought some at the commissary. I made two DIY softboxes out of shoeboxes. Right now I just have printer paper to diffuse the light, I think I'll try the parchment paper...

On some of the DIY sites they said they're using architectural tracing paper, which is pretty stiff and durable. You can probably get it from HonBlue or Hawaiian Graphics.

Agreed! much easier to track. I hear on December 5th Canon is holding a "Canon total workflow" workshop @ the Pagoda.
Canon shooter Josh Sanseri (http://sanseri.com/)
and printer master Scott Jo will teach lighting, posing, and printing.
I am not sure what ticket price is yet, but the admission price will be good for a rebate @ lighthaus camera for all Canon equipment!
I also know that come January, Lighthaus camera will be hosting Canon photographer Jennifer Wu (http://www.jenniferwu.com/). She is an accomplished photographer in Landscape as well as Astro-photography. She will be @ UH on the 8th and then on the 9th Lighthaus is hosting a Photo-Safari with her.

my experience with Nikon glass...high end nikon glass is that they're better made than canon lenses. way pricier too. 2x D3 + 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, 400 2.8 seem VERY tempting...if only i could afford it.

the shadows are still a little harsh.
for this to really work as a soft box, you'll need to add an omnibounce on the flash itself. this will allow the flash to actually be dispersed onto the shiny material and then through whatever diffusion material you place on the front and thus utilizing the full area of the box and thus becoming more of a soft box.
without a diffuser, your flash basically just flashes forward and won't be utilizing the silver reflective area because ultimately, the flash is only illuminating small portion of the diffusion material you are placing on the front. some light will reflect off of the material, back into the silver reflective material and then back out through the diffusion material, but not a lot. not enough for it to be an effective soft box.
for diffusion material, i recommend using ripstop nylon, vellum or tracing paper. wax paper is a little yellow and white paper will block a lot of light as opposed to diffusing it.

try using some white bounce cards to add some fill light and add definition to the glass and the handle and give them more "shape".

Thanks for letting me know that. I was wondering why the shadows were not soft enough. I do have some vellum paper lying around so I'll use that along with my stofen diffuser.
that should work.

the teapot blends in too much with the background. it needs to be separated from the background so we can see that it is a tea pot. the lid and handle are not easily recognizable and therefore it is difficult to see the teapot.
which is what i;ve been saying...but explained so much better.
thanks darrell. you are the light meister. =)

Anyone used or own the Sigma 12-24? looks like a "good" UWA lens for 1.3x and FF.

Some random thought...
Have you ever tried shooting with your other eye so you can use the other side of your brain? The reason why I ask is because I've recently been shooting with a waist-level viewfinder for another camera and I've noticed I don't analyze as much as I do when I shoot with my right eye only. Perhaps since I'm shooting with both eyes open, I am utilizing both the logical and creative side of the brain. So, does it make a difference or am I just weird? (its ok to say I'm weird, because I know I am)

There was a thread on the general section regarding using which side of your brain, left or right side. The test was similar as to control the rotation of the image on the screen (a girl stand up rotating on the vertical axle).
I am weird too cause I could rotate the image in both directions at will lol...

I do it every time I shoot and need to get low. Never thought about using the other side of my brain, but they do come out straighter.

the 580EX had that problem, one person on a forum had to go to the hospital went the melting plastic dripped on his arm. you have a 580EXII so you wont have that problem. the thermal insulation keeps it from melting, but there's been reports that the thermal insulation causes heat to buildup inside and kill the electronics before the plastic casing could melt. you really wont see this problem if you shoot from the four batteries in your speedlite. once you put a battery pack on it and the recycle times get fast you get into trouble. i almost killed my 580EX.

So when you getting it? When I become a professional photographer...which is never...LOL...I'm not even worthy of my XTi, no way I could live up to something like that Hasselblad.
I decided to not upgrade the body for awhile...gonna concentrate on shooting better, PPing better and get some better lenses before I upgrade to a 40D or 50D.A little boiler at Campbell industrial park.Cool, we'll try and get a meet going for Nate (rockabilly808 ) when he gives us a date. Can we shoot the boiler?

I think Hasselblads are cool, but I would rather have the a Leaf camera, I think their quality is coming to and may have passed Hasselblad. Look at this forum as to why.

Good call. I used to use the xti for work and it's a good body with good functions. The photographer from Lighting Essentials uses an xti body.
