Hi everyone.

I don't mean to disrespect anyone on this site what so ever, but I can't work out the reason for the lack of C&C, critique, criticism, advice, opinions, help (call it what you will) when I post the odd image or two. As newbies, those are the exact reasons why we post some of our images. The stunning photos that get posted by other obviously very experienced (and sometimes professional people) seem to get no end of replies. Are my/our images that bad that they don't deserve a comment ?? Are they only average and don't deserve a comment ?? I know as newbies our first images are going to be very average at best, but surely these are the ones that should be receiving the most comments ??? Once again, I thought that was one of the main aims/reasons for the site......to gain knowledge and learn from other photographers by way of an interactive forum ??

No offence intended.......thanks, Matt.

Don't take it personally...

Sometimes the "share" forums can be frustrating at times.

Have you posted specifically to the C&C Forum? You can get anything from high praise to a rather vicious shredding there if you so desire.

Keep Shooting and Posting and toss in a dose of patience as well...

The trouble is that different newbies post for different reasons- I am like you, and want to get as many comments as possible. Others, I think, get very offended when people criticise their photographs. Then again, there are some very experienced people on this forum who must see a great many average or below-average photos; then one stunner comes along, and they give their comments on that one as it stands out.
I guess we should post our pics in the C&C section, rather than the birds one.

As a non Birder who enjoys looking at what Birders shoot, I've noticed that there is more a feeling of sharing images of the Birds you've found than a desire to have specific images critiqued.

I wouldn't stop posting Birds in the Birds Forum but maybe you should (if you aren't already) pointedly asking for C&C or asking more experienced Birders for tips to make a shot better?

Just my non Birding $0.02...

I agree with everything that's been said thus far. I would also like to add that sometimes things move quickly in the bird forum...don't get frustrated...it happens to everybody.

I'm not one to critique someone elses photo as I'm still learning myself...not fair to the person looking to improve their photographs.

All I can say is keep posting your images either here or in the critique forum. I've picked up alot of information reading replies to other topics...not mine specifically in the bird forum.

It was just pointed out to me this morning that I have over 30K posts. I hadn't even noticed. Most of those come from over two years in the Bird forum, answering as many posts as I could, and taking particular notice to try and not let a single thread drop off the bottom with a zero post count. I know how that feels, and I believe that any image, no matter how good or bad deserves some comment, at least one.

Forums only survive though, when everyone takes part. The Bird forum is one of the better ones here. We have a lot of people who troll, but then a lot of people who do actually participate too. I found that if you want people to post to your threads, you have to post to theirs. I honestly don't think most of my images are that noteworthy, but a lot of people post to my threads, cause I return the favor. What goes around, comes around. On the other hand, there are many people here who post beautiful shots, but never seem to post in anyone else's threads. I'm not so driven to leave a post for those people, although sometimes I still do anyway.

I have no comment on this topic :p.

I agree with Mitch as well, Sometimes I have time to post comments, other times I just have a couple of minutes to browse. I do however try to save posts from the second and third page oblivion if I happen to notice posts there without a comment. As stated this forum moves quickly, if 3 people jump on and add a new post each, 3 other posts get bumped to the next page. ah the circle of life.

Hi Matt & welcome to POTN

I agree with Mitch & Gary and think you just need to participate more, which should come naturally with time. I think that participation needs to start with the threads you start. Looking through your posts, you have started 18 threads and only made 19 comments in those threads (a number of them you make no posts other than the original). Only three of the threads you've started have a final comment by you, with one of the threads having three pages of comments with none by you after the first page. Please take this as constructive criticism as the point is to encourage you to thank people for comments they've made on your threads and also show your ongoing & active interest in threads you've started. Its also about the only way to get to know people individually on a large forum like POTN. Having said all that, I know I've been bothered in the past by the lack of comments on my picture posts, but that was because my expectations were too high. Most of my posts are in the bird forum and typically comments are generally around 10% of the number of views.....so when I receive more or less than 10% comments I'm pretty sure the shot is either really good or really bad :)

Don't get discouraged Matt and keep posting, your photography is very good and your new 100-400 is working well. The photogs hanging around the bird forum are a great bunch, I know they've helped me tremendously.....but buying all these lenses is getting expensive :)

I have to agree with most of the above.

I find that you get the regular posters ( Freddy, Macro junkie, lordV, mPower and many more ) who have mastered there style of photography and are always out doing themselves! and these posters tend to end up with the 2-3 pages of "GREAT WORK" ect..

Then you get the newbies like myself who unless you post wait a day and then posted again ask for comments/C&C don't tend to get them :D

Ideally, Get noticed on the boards, Make comments to other threads show that you are giving to the board and you will find that many will start giving back.

What specific questions are you asking when you post? Are you including EXIF? If get get specific about what you're looking for, and include all relevant information that will help people evaluate issues, then you'll get more response.

I did a search and found a few posts of yours. You did include info about the shot, but you only asked for C&C. That is a very vague question. How about something more specific like "this shot isn't as sharp as I want, any suggestions" or "what could I do to improve the exposure on the shot, given the lighting conditions," "what do you think about the composition of this shot" and so on. Include some self evaluation and include C&C of your own shots, ask for others options. You get out of C&C what you put into it. Remember that doing C&C takes time. For me, I'm more inclined to give feedback when I see there has been effort put into asking questions. Also, have you reciprocated by giving your own C&C to others? Again, you get out of it what you put into it. People tend to respond to those who are demonstrated their own willingness to help others. I noticed that your post count is fairly new so I do think it's a bit premature for you to be concerned about not getting too many comments. The forum of course is here for you to learn, but you also have to give back.

Note that the share forums are for sharing, so people typically don't put a lot of C&C type comments unless you're very specific about what you're looking for. Also note that now you've asked specific questions, and you're getting plenty of responses. People are willing to answer questions when they're asked!

Awesome !!!!....thanks every one for taking the time to explain and help.

I think the reason why newbies such as myself aren't posting as many comments (especially 'critique') as we should is that we feel we're not 'qualified' to due to our lack of experience and knowledge. But then, now that I think more about it, they're are just our opinions. As with everyone elses' opinions I guess other members can take out of what we think as much or as little as they like.

Once again thanks all for your comments and enlightenment.

You watch.....one day soon I'll post a "nailed" shot and the thread will be chocka full of 'great capture', 'stunning shot', 'spot on' and 'you really nailed that one' comments. It'll be that good that no one will be able to 'critique' it........hhmmmmm.......here's hoping anyway....LOL.

Cheers, Matt.

Being a newbie to these forums myself, and admittedly not taking the greatest photos due to a current lens restriction, I've often found that I can contribute to discussions which I may have some knowledge about, namely birds of prey and military aircraft.

I'm hoping to pick up a couple of lenses by the New Year, in particular a 75-300mm zoom and perhaps a EF 17-40mm wide angle for some air to air photo shoots I'll have a chance to do in the coming years, and when I start taking photos with these lenses I'll definitely be asking for critiques!

Until then, though, I'm shooting with a 55mm kit lens and the results have been...meh. :)
