I'd get rid of the really blurred one and I'd certainly lose the close up of the elbow!

How about posting some here - I'm not going to head off to some website to offer my thoughts. You want our opinions but you can't make the effort to post some shots here, why should anyone make the effort to offer you any constructive critique?

Some nice images from checking the thumbs, but as said, for more specific CC post a few ;)

Interesting set up... It's mostly about faces though... I'd try to keep the faceless shots to a minimum...
And yes... post some of your favorites here...

I kinda like #5. #6 is nice, but you chopped off his feet, and the position of the drummer is unfortunate ;)
I'm assuming the focus on the hand in #8 is intentional, but I'd prefer it on the face.

In general, most off the images would be improved by a crop.

Cool portfolio! I'd like to start one of my own to maybe get hired to photograph events. Do you get a lot more photographer gigs since posting your portfolio online?

Bit of a thread hijack.. I didn't start getting gigs until people started to know who I was and what I was capable of. That's typically how it works. Shoot everything you can (ie, local venues) and eventually you'll get lucky and catch the attention of someone who can actually pay you to do it (ie, venue owner, band manager, the band themselves, promoter, etc). Just don't give stuff away for free, otherwise you become known as 'that guy'

As far as the portfolio, I'm partial to #2 and #5. Be careful in adding blurred shots (unless it was intentional), +1 to ditching the elbow shot, be careful about chopping off body parts, and be cautious of putting too many of the same group in your portfolio. Having 10 great Deftones shots and maybe a few more bands says you've covered two shows and got lucky. Shots of 20 different bands, all with great composition, exposure, and focus.. that at least conveys you know what you're doing. Also be wary of the 'mic in the face' shot.

Really like #2... And the rest of your portfolio on your site is pretty cool as well. My friend is a great live photographer. Here's his portfolio:

They are okay photos, not great, keep reading and learning. No one knows everything and everyone can learn something from everyone. Not meant to be harsh, there are always ways to improve any photo in my mind.

#1 He is just tuning... nothing interesting. Your photos need to tell a story and this one is boring. It is a huge pet peeve of mine to see photos of people tuning or just standing around. Looks a little OOF too.

#2. Pretty cool shot just watch cropping his foot and the head of the bass.

#3. Does not look in focus... Looks like the guitar is in focus and none of the rest is. I try to look at his face but it is not clear. Maybe it is just the bad lighting... maybe try it in B/W.

#4. Personal preference is I do not like flash blur and there is a lot of "Stuff" that distracts the viewers eyes from the subject.

#5. Pretty cool but slightly over exposed, I would like to see him more clearly.

#6. Decent emotion but not properly exposed.

#7. Cool but mic is in the way and blown highlights.

#8 blurry or OOF. Try not to crop out guitar heads and body parts.... not always possible but aim not to.

hey everyone, i appreciate the feedback. proper composition is harder than it looks, and i gotta keep that in mind.

also, keeping things in focus is nearly impossible sometimes. do ya'll recommend autofocus or manual?

Absolutely, I shoot a lot of primes so it makes it tough, if anything shoot wide adn then crop.

OOF photos are nearly useless for such things as portfolios.... and any other disply puposes for that matter. It is okay for personal use but if you are hoping to go professional at some point, you will need to get sharp photos.

Settings are something you will have to figure out on your own, different things work for different people and work differently on different equipment. It will also depend on how big of a viewfinder you have.... Do you have a rebel or a 1 series? Makes a big difference.

Get out and shoot local shows.... shoot shoot shoot. Believe me you will learn MUCH MUCH more from a weeks worth dimly lit bar shows than big lights at the begining... You might not get the results you want right away but learn how your equipment reacts to different lighting and what settings to use in tough environments and it will only get easier.

I like the shots you have, but I can't give an unbiased opinion since ive always been a fan of the deftones and team sleep :)

Were you hired to work with them, or friends of the band members? Im super envious of the fact youve had so many chances to shoot them :) I saw them here in Vancouver several years back, it was actually the first rock concert I ever went to. Kicked some major ass hehe :)

I should add also that I am a Deftones fan, and I sure hope the bass player is okay....

hey man! deftones are my fav band of all time! i toured w/ them a couple summers ago. what a blast! shooting them can be tricky b/c of all the back-lighting and they're averse to front-lighting! thanks for the feedback :)
