I have created an article on how to take good exposure shots in low lighting environment using Canon A70 and a slave flash. Check this link at

Very cool, Iv been looking at getting a slave flash for my A80, the internal one really is rather limited, and a slave is something I know I will be able to use with any camera I may own in the future.

One more option for the A70 and slave flash, is to use the A70 in manual exposure mode and the flash in manual mode. With the flash in manual mode on the A70, the pre flash is disabled and you can use a regular slave flash. I use a pair of Vivtar 283s with Wein Peanut Slaves attached. With the A70 flash on manual, I have the option of turning down the in camera flash so that it flashes just enough to trigger the slaves, with little effect on the final exposure. A flash exposure meter would be an asset for determining exposure under these conditions.

Good article. Does that piece of reflecting material near the flash really work?

I found that this small Vivitar digital slave flash works really well. I can attach it to my A70 with Velcro and with a flash defector over the regular flash I can eliminate red eye. The flash comes with an accessory stand and bracket and is only $20. I put a piece of frosted tape over the flash so it will work with all flash modes without any exposure compensation.

You can bounce flash using the included bracket, and as for sample shots go, well nothing special there, just no red eye.

Does that Vivitar slave flash work with all modes, or do you always have to be in manual mode? In other words, does it fire on the pre-flash or on the secondary flash?

u have to check Vivitar slave flash specification. Many slave flashes support preflash nowsaday ...

The specs say it has a "learning" mode and doesn't fire on the pre-flash. So it should work fine. I plan to use it for macro-photography. Too bad they don't make slave triggers that support preflash (I have a good minolta 280px flash that is going to waste).

PS. You have excellent shots of all kinds of interesting bugs. If you didn't use a tripod, you have very steady hands and lots of talent!

There are a number of slave adapters that work with double flash digital cameras.

I have these:

Wein Peanut Digital Slave: It did not work, sent it back. (defective?)

Digital Slave DS1K: Works, but not as well as the Sunpak. When I put it on a straight bracket with a flash on top, I kept griping it with my hand and blocking the sensor.

Sunpak Digital Camera Flash Adapter Bracket: Works very well, but uses 4 AA batteries and must be turned on and off.

Have a look around this site:

The Vivitar DF120 used two AAA batteries and they don’t last very long. I use rechargeable and if I leave it on for 10 mins. they go dead. When you switch it off the flash fires. You use it in the #2 position for Canon cameras in all auto modes, but you must put frosted tape over the flash to get the correct exposure.
