View Full Version : Nerves of Steel

Westwood Memorial, a tiny cemetery no more than two acres in size, yet housing an impressive number of famous permanent residents (Walter Matthaw, Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe, Jim Backus, Burt Lancaster, Buddy Rich, Mel Torme, Carroll O'Connor, etc.), sits in the midst of a cluster of tall buildings. When I arrived there today, I noticed they were building a new high-rise nearby. They've got a good start on about 15 or 20 floors, and look like they're going a bit higher. The crane next to the building was enormous, towering over just about everything else in the area:

As I looked at it, I realized there were several people up there walking around on it!

There was even one guy way out on the far end of it, probably controlling it as it swung around:

There isn't enough money in the world to get me up there! I'll bet the view up there was fantastic, though...

Real nerves of steel - wow.
A high rise crane collapsed in the UK last week killing two people.

I've heard of that happening sometimes, too. That would make me even more nervous to be up there. I also forgot to mention, there was also someone in that cage hanging from the crane.

Yup! That's up there, rule of thumb 10' to 12' between floors, 15 to 20 floors= 180' to 240' or more and the crane looks to be twice again as high. Not for the faint at heart.  Nice shots.

This is going to drive me insane! I just locked down IE tight. Turned off just about everything, set security as high as it will go, and it still works fine for me... What the heck could it be? I've been hearing from tons of people who can see my pix, and so far only two that can't. What is the common denominator?
Sometimes I hate computers... :D

How about now? I went ahead and checked the "Allow direct requests (ie. entering the url to an image in your browser)" option on my server. I haven't disabled hot-link protection completely, but this should at least let you get to them. I didn't really want to do this much, but I don't know what else to try. I'll have to ask around on my web space provider's forum to see if anyone there has any ideas.

Don't worry. I really want to uncheck that box, but I'm going to leave it alone until I can figure out why you two seem to have problems when I'm using that setting... It should NOT work that way, as you can tell by everyone else who didn't have a problem with it. I just have to figure out what's going wrong, and where.

thanks a lot Lonnie
very nice.
you can cut off that method if you like
and whenever Alan or I need to see a picture we can tell you ?
not such an ideal situation but if it's causing any kind of 'trouble' we can do that
there so very many cranes are all around the city and suburbs over here.
lots of building going on everywhere.
it's a good sign in ways I suppose
At Christmas time some of the cranes are decorated with fairy lights...
all along the length of them
and can be seen for miles.
looks just great .
I love them

No, that would be way too much of a hassle. I'll just leave it the way it is now until I can figure out what the heck is going wrong here.

I didn't see any lights on this one, but I'm sure it must have those flashing red lights so helicopters can see it at night. That's pretty much standard procedure around here.
