I have a 10d and shoot indoor basketball and volleyball games with a 550EX flash. The lens is 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. Using the manual mode the shutter speed is set between 125 to 160 depending on lighting. What I find to be a problem is trying to keep the apertaure open all the way to 3.5. Zooming out allows me to obtain the large aperture, however, zooming in tends to automatically close the aperture to 5.6. Is there any way for me to trick the lens into keeping the aperature all the way open?

Any help on this is apprecitated.

Sorry, but f/5.6 is the maximum aperture of that lens at full zoom. That's just the nature of the beast and there's nothing you can do about it if you want to shoot at the long zoom end of that lens.

The good news is that you can shoot at 5.6 all the time in AV mode or manual. 135 2.8 SF lenses are pretty cheap though, it that's the focal range you like.
