from what I understand - in order to blow up a photo from my 20d to a really large size I need to enlarge the raw file in a program like phase one before I covert to a tiff and work on it in photo shop. Is this correct.
THat is what my lab guy said. If thats true can someone help me do that. Ive been messing around with phase one and can't figure that out.
thanks
ashley

Here is my workflow

1) photo adjustments -> levels, saturation, etc

2) editing, blending, etc

3) resizing

I open raw images up in PS CS8 and then upsize it to the size i want in inches equivalent to 300dpi. Sometimes i do it as an upsize of the original raw file, other times ill convert to tiff first and then upsize.

One thing is for certain i dont upsize in 8bit mode... only in 16bit mode.

Upsizing is usually my second last step though as its easier to work on the raw image to start with as opposed to working on an image at 10000x8000 @300 dpi for example.

My last step is converting the file to as loss less compression as possible for transporting.. ie raw - tiff and then burning to cd.

Ive successfully printed out panaramos at 1500x50cm, large prints at 35x30in using this technique.

do I need PS CS8? I have PS 7. It doesn't have the capability to work on RAW's. Can I use Phase one to size the Raw?

Yes you can use PO to re-size from RAW. It is very easy and quite obvious. Select the processing tab and you will see Scaling. Adjust this to say 150% and look at what happens to the image size. Set the resolution to 300dpi. You may get a shock when you see the size of the TIFF files.

I always use PO (C1) to up-size images as I only shoot in RAW and it is the best stage to do it. Actually, PO does a very good job of up-sizing. You can then work on the larger image in PS7 but be aware that it will drag its feet somewhat due to the huge amount of data it has to shuffle around.

I think only the pro version of CO will allow you to re-size. At least LE does not have that capability.

SE has the feature.

Open your RAW in PS CS8 and then upsize it to the size you want.
