Can someone please recommend a wide angle lens for me?
It will be used on a digital rebel but does not have to be a Canon lens. price is my problem.
I will use it for still shots of vehicles and scenery shots. Both if bright light conditions (sunny/sand)
Does not have to be the best on the market but rather a middle of the road lens.
thanks,
Mike

www.rugift.com
and kiev camera - google it
they have 8mm and 16mm primes... for about 125 and 200$ respectfully.
IMO those are decent lenses for what they do.

Whats your budget?
If it wernt for the fact that i work for the paper, my WA lens would have been the tokina 17mm f/3.5.
It's about $350 and simply stunning, especially for its price.
(i wanted the zoom and weather sealing of the 17-40)

I haven't used any cheap wide angles on digital with the crop factor, but on film cheap wides tend to vinette. Where's the spell chec?

How wide is wide?
Your camera body has a 1.6 factor in it, so do you need a lens of 15 or 20mm?
Zoom or fixed?

What lenses do you currently own? Do you have the kit lens?
On a 35 mm film SLR, what focal length would you be looking for?
28 mm? 24 mm? 20 mm?
Best regards,
Andy

I agree with TimmyQ, if you don't need zoom but want HIGH quality optics and even better build, the Tokina 17ATX Pro is in a class of it's own.

I'd prefer some type of zoom.
Price range is 200-300.
I will look into the tokina 17ATX.
I currently have the kit lens and a 300 zoom.
Don't need it to be real wide but woudl liek it to get better pic's of vehicles at a closer range while still included all of it in the shot.
Also scenery shots.
thanks for the help!

Are there any zooms out there in the $200-$300 range (I assume you mean US).
I don't think there is anything out there in that range that is any better than the kit lens (well, that depends... what camera and kit lens do you have?)

I have the digital rebel with the 55mm kit lens.
maybe I should look into a foxed lens?

the kit lens is 18mm
if you need wider, you need something like the SIGMA 12 - 24 mm 4.5 - 5.6 EX or CANON EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
but I think that's not in your price range

There are several new wide angle zooms coming out very soon from Tamron, Tokina and Sigma, all made for the smaller sensors like your digital rebel, and all will be right around 10-20mm range. There is a good chance one of those three will be near your budget.
If you don't need much wider than the kit lens and are mainly just looking for better quality and a prime, the Tokina 17mm is a very good lens. I was lucky enough to pick one up off eBay recently for $220 shipped in perfect condition.

How are you finding that Tokina, Phil ? How sharp is it ?
I'm thinking of getting one as my next lens. Could you post some images from it ?
Cheers
Gary.

I'll throw in my .02. If you're patient and look around I'm sure you can find a Tamron 28-75 F/2.8 around for under $300. I just picked one up and it's' an awesome lens for the price! Dont' know much, if anything about the Tokina lens though. Best leave that to the pros..

I went from the kit lens 18-55mm, and the Tokina is definately nicer.
It's built like a tank, is very flare resistant, and also has little distortion.
These were all taken at, or nearly, wide open.

50% Crop (http://www.mts.net/~lftbrain/20d/IMG_4032.jpg)
These (http://www.fotop.net/sharpnsmart/10222004) were all taken with the Tokina too.

I'm not sure my Tokina 17mm is as sharp as drisley's wide open, but if I get a chance I'll do some comparison shots with the kit lens this this weekend and post them.

I really like the 20-35 USM(Canon..not L)...Stopped down, I can't tell the final pictures from my 17-40L lens. Its a great lens for the money...I think about $300.

What's the difference in the Tokina 17ATX Pro and non Pro?
there is a non pro for 100 on ebay.

I think the non pro is an old manual focus lens.

The older AT-X is autofocus, but I'm not sure what the differences are on the newer Pro model besides the better focusing mechanism. I think I remember reading that they are the same optically when I first started looking into this lens, but I don't know this for sure. The focus on the AT-X Pro is pretty slow and noisy as it is, so I'm not sure how slow the non-pro will be.

And here are some side comparisons with the Tokina 17mm and the 18-55mm EF-S kit lens I did earlier today. I am less than impressed, but it might be a good choice for a non EF-S camera:
