What do you guys have for a back-up. I have been looking into one for my Elan 7, but can't decide if I need one.

in film when I was doing work for weddings etc
I had an EOS5 and backup was an EOS600
The important thing was
it handled the same was and so in an emergency I could just pick the other camera up and continue. To make sure of that I used to use it as the main camera every now and then

Since I have yet to get rid of any of my previous cameras (digital or film), I guess in my case, the answer would always be a big YES! :)

Same here ...
G2, N***n 601, Canon Ixus, one-way disposable...
Still, most likely I wouldn't shoot a wedding with only these as backup
But then, most likely I wouldn't shoot a wedding at all.
Best regards,
Andy

If I may offer a suggestion, I think either the 20D or the up and coming DRebel XT would make a very good backup for your Elan 7.

Lessee. 20D, backup is D60, backup is A80, backup is DC290, backup is Elan 7e, backup is T90, backup is New F-1, backup is F-1n, backup is Nikonos. By the time I run through all of those, B&H should have been able to drop-ship me a replacement 20D. You'll notice that all the digitals are in front. That's because they all use CF cards and either BP-511 or AA cells, so I absolutely have power and media for them. The Elan and T90 also run with AA cells, which I have. The F-1s need 544 and PX13 respectively - less likely to have fresh ones on hand. But the F-1n and Nikonos will work at any old setting with zero power and I have a battery-free hand-held meter too. Seriously, I don't expect to drop below the A80. Anything that wipes out the first 3 cameras on the list will leave me inoperable as well.

I will let other people take the 50% and I will buy new or used in a year and I will have a camera that would cost 2/3 more a year - year and a half earlier.

All cameras are..................
1DMKII, 10D, Elan 7n, another elan 7n, and an Arca-Swiss Large Format with a BetterLight digital back. For personal use I use the 1D the most and 10D backup, but overall I use the Large Format the most and don't really have anything comparable to back it up with.

I have several backups. The two cameras that get the most use (about the same amount for each) are my 20D and Olympus C-8080WZ. Then, occasionally I'll fire up the 10D, Elan 7E or Pentax K1000.

20d and elan 7n (stays in the bag, havent had to crack it out since photog classes) *knocks on wood*
however i intend on ONE DAY affording a higher model and using my 20d for backup...then the elan 7n can collect dust in the trunk (boot) of the car...
but with my financial state the 20d will have to be sold to afford anything better...

Use a 300D or 350D if u can get one as ur backup and try out digital. You might like it, and there solid cameras.
