Hi Folks
I am currently off work on the sick at home - and as such thought I would do some testing of my various memory cards
nothing too scientific all done with a stop watch and a Sandisk extreme 2 USB reader
I copied a 1.80gb file back and forth of formatted cards and also did a test clocking how fast my 1dmk2N would clear a full buffer of 24 raw files
so here we go

CF card 2gb sandisk extreme 4
hard drive to card - 3 mins 4 secs
card reader to hard drive - 1 min 53 secs
time to clear 24 frames from camera buffer -17 seconds

CF card 8gb extreme ducati special edition
hard drive to card - 2 mins 50 secs
card reader to hard drive - 1 min 50 secs
time to clear 24 frames from camera buffer - 17 seconds

16 gb extreme 3 (old version) CF card
hard drive to card - 4 mins 57 secs
card reader to hard drive - 2 min 2 secs
time to clear 24 frames from camera buffer - 27 seconds

8gb Ultra 2 SD card
hard drive to card - 3 mins 53 secs
card reader to hard drive - 1 min 52 secs
time to clear 24 frames from camera buffer - 21 seconds

8gb extreme 3 old version cf card
hard drive to card - 3 mins 50 secs
card reader to hard drive - 1 min 52 secs
time to clear 24 frames from camera buffer - 21 seconds

Danepak 4gb CF card
hard drive to card - 7 mins 5 secs
card reader to hard drive - 4 min 12 secs
time to clear 24 frames from camera buffer - 49 seconds

Datawrite SD card 2gb cheapo costing £7
hard drive to card - 8 mins 18 secs
card reader to hard drive - 1 min 47 secs
time to clear 24 frames from camera buffer - 40 seconds

Transcend CF card 120X 8gb cost £20
hard drive to card - 4 mins 31 secs
card reader to hard drive - 1 min 57 secs
time to clear 24 frames from camera buffer - 27 seconds

I must say I find these results rather puzzling - my 16 gb extreme 3 looks as though its a fake and will be looking into it as I only buy from reputable dealers!!! so looks like this one got through the net
the Transcend card for £20 looks like it was good buy for that money which completly beats the fake one that cost a fortune some 12 months ago

the two top line ones Ducati and exteme 4 look very evenly matched
my 8gb ex 3 is not that far behind the top two which is pleasing
I would be interested to see how these cards shape up at clearing the buffer on a 50d or the upcoming 5D with the faster processors and UDMA enabled

please dont think these tests were in a lab or anything just sat here bored, so I ran the tests
I am interested to hear how some of you guys interpretate these numbers
cheers Chris

You might compare your results to the database of results on the Rob Galbraith web site. (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007)

The 50D with UDMA the light goes out really fast. Instant transfer.
