I'm a little frustrated here.
Just called Canon Irvine, wanting to know approximate cost of out-of-warranty service to a working EF 300mm 2.8 and was immediately transfered to NJ. after a long wait all they could tell me was send it in for an estimate! polite, but No help at all.

Does anyone here have an idea (maybe from recent experience) for a ballpark cost to service a functioning 7 year old EF 300 2.8, and maybe clean a little mold (gasp!) from the front element?

Mold? They'll probably want to replace the element, not clean it. For sure the multi-coating's taken a serious hit.

Not too sure how far you live from the Irving service center but I would seriously suggest that you should just take it in to them and let one of the service reps have a quick glance at it. I've done that with our local Canon center here and they gave me an answer on the spot.

if that's the worst case, I wonder how much that would run for

good idea. I guess I was hoping to get that over the phone, realizing that it would be hard to do and just a ball park figure

I took a really used 200mm 1.8L into NJ for a cleaning and test. I bought it used and have used it here and there with some really good results. I just figured I would get it serviced. The quote was $181. I am waiting for them to call me to come get it.
