I don't know what they are called, but I know how they are formed.

No they are not formed by the waves. It's the opposite.

Imagine the beach sand (on the right) like a big sponge, it absorbs the sea water when it's covered. Then when the sea recedes (low tide) the water in the sand start flowing toward the sea. And the weak points/areas in the sand collapse, forming this pattern.

Hope I explained it right :o

"Runnel"

runnel - definition from gcide
Runnel \Run"nel\, n. [From Run. Cf. Rindle.]
A rivulet or small brook.
[1913 Webster]

Bubbling runnels joined the sound. --Collins.
[1913 Webster]

By the very sides of the way . . . there are slow
runnels, in which one can see the minnows swimming.
--Masson.

This photo was taken in Teluk Cempedak, Kuantan, Pahang.. honestly, it's not a nice place to go actually because the beach is very dangerous ..

Wonderful!

I don't know what's more amazing ... the picture or the revelation that CDS actually has access to a dictionary

Best regards,
Andy

PS: If it's not clear yet what they are actually called ... I like 'rivulet' best ... has a very nice ring to it :D

Interesting shot - looks like there could be a spring or river there feeding into that.

And why is it dangerous to go there? I'm intrigued.

I'd call it mini longkang. Just j/k :p Nice shot!

Yupe, east coast of Malaysia has beautiful islands and beach. If I have a chance, I'd love to go to Tioman and Perhentian in the future.
