Hey, I jsut received my brand new 10D. I put on one of my older EF 35-80mm lenses I used with my old film camera. The only problem is that when i put the lens on "AF" auto focus, it doesnt work. Is there somthing wrong with the camera, or is this lens not able to be used in AF mode on the 10D, or am I doing somthing wrong? I am brand new to the 10D so any help would be apreciated! I looked in the manuel and all it talked about was changing the different AF modes such as "ONE SHOT" "AI FOCUS" and "AI SERVO" but nothing about actually turning the auto focus on or off, so this kinda scares me. I am hopeing it is somthing I am over loooking and not the camera. Anyways, thanks for any help you may have.
The lens is a Canon 35-80mm 1:4-5.6 AF/MF

Is the camera really brand spanking new or did you buy it used. If it's used, there's a chance the previous owner set the Custom Function C.Fn-04 to something other than the default 0. Check the manual on how to set the custom functions and see what C.Fn-04 is set to. If it's anything other than 0, set it to 0.
AAMOF, you might want to go to the end of the custom function section in the manual where it shows you how to reset the camera to the factory default settngs so that you don't get any more surprises.

My understading is that if the lens is switched to AF then the camera will communicate and "auto" focus. Follow advice above - if does not work try another AF lens, if same problem, then probably lies in the camera

When you say, "the lens doesn't work," you might be more specific.
For example, with the camera in the correct mode, and with the lens in AF, then what happens when you point at a well-lit scene? Do you get the little red focus square lighting up in the viewfinder? If you shoot the scene, does the image come out completely blurry, as if no focus at all was even tried? Or, does the camera not fire at all?

If the camera is used, then I would recommend doing the following:
press menu, scroll down untill you find clear settings, press set and selet "Clear all camera settings" and press set.
Then select "clear all custom functions" and press set.
what this will do is set all the settings on the camera to the factory default. If you still have a problem and then lens works fine on the other camera then you may have a faulty camera.
