I need to buy a Circular Polarizer for my 17-40 f4.
Between various brands and price ranges (from $40
to over $200), how do you select the best polarizer
in terms of cost-benefit? I don't think there is a
sticky on this.

Don't buy cheap and do get a multicoated one. It doesn't make sense to put cheap glass on a good lens. I use a B&W 77mm CPL.

Canon recommends... Surprise. :D The Canon circ polarizer. That is what I use. The only thing I don't like about it is there are no front threads. So you can't put a lens cap on it. :(

Also, unless you're using a 1Ds (full-frame sensor), you don't have spend extra money for the thin filters. Vignetting won't be a problem, even at 17mm.

OK, I agree its dumb to put a cheap piece of glass in front of a decent lens. Thing is at $225 I think its also dumb to spend a third as much on the filter as the lens.
Personally I'll go for something reasonable, fairly cheap, and just be aware of when it may cause problems.
I wonder what the most expensive filter you could put on the $70 50 1.8 is? :)

I use the Canon CP's on the sizes they carry, 58mm and 77mm for me, but bought a B&W for my 67mm needs, it was around 135 or so. You have to just bite the bullet and get something decent . . . bad glass in front of "L" glass is just not smart. Next to CP's my lens wear nothing at all.

Is the Canon CPL super-duper multicoated?
Also, once you get the CPL for the 17-40, do
you still use a Hoya UV filter or can you trash
it? It has been pretty useless so far.

I've heard a few times on here that all polarizers are plastic and not glass.

Haha. That's even a little pricy for my f1.4.
