I have seen this rotary snow plow work . . . it is the snow plow that the Oregon Short Line used on the main line between Ogden and Portland. The Portland Rose had to make schedule through my neck of the woods and it was this beast that cleared the track of drifts and 'extra' deep snow. I think they are going to restore her and put it on display in Ogden at the Union Station. I am a sucker for trains and anything that goes with them.

I hope the train followers enjoy the view of the blades.

LOL, will with the Canon 50mm/1.4 if you want to get closer . . . you have to walk up to do the zooming, thus it is a 'sneaker zoom' lens.

For years, the Southern Pacific kept a Snow Blower parked in the yard at Sparks, Nevada (Reno). They kept another one in Roseville (Sacramento). I guess the thinking was that if there was a big storm in the Sierras, they could attack it from both directions. They've had relatively few big storms in recent years, and they eventually moved all the equipment to Roseville.

Most of the snow blowers are pretty old and get very limited use. Nowadays the railroads much prefer to use plows and flangers whenever possible.

I figure it is about seven feet to the center of the rotary . . . so this is no small machine. That means that each vein is as tall as a big man. and the RPM on this can move some air, throw some snow. I have seen the 'wedge' plows but they are not as photogenic as these . . .

That's an old steam-powered unit. Very cool.
