Found this among some old shots. Any input?

Nice shot maybe some more contrast could help a bit.

great shot, but is your sensor really dirty? or is that just stuff flying off the fire?

Stuff off of the fire.

OK, Mr. "I-know-how-to-start-a-fire", how do we get the steaks off the grill now?

It's an amazingly wonderful idea, and the composition is great, but it's so, so soft :(.

The people are soft because the heat off the fire is distorting their image. I am not sure if the fire is sharp or not. And as for the steak, I think it was burnt.

I agree about the heat distorting the men in the background of the image. The foreground objects and flames are tack sharp. There would be no way to get the men in the background sharp because of the refraction caused by the hot gasses. Very innovative shot. I like the way that the refraction is showing just enough distortion to give a good indication of how hot the flames are.

Too bad about the steaks.

I think it's more than just the gases. It seems as though he had is aperture opened up a bit, but I can't really tell because there's no exif. Anyway, I came to this conclusion based on the fact that the people are soft from head to, well, ankle, equally. Flames are hottest at the tip, therefore there would be more distortion by their heads than their arms.

with the guy on the left, it gets sharper as your go down the arm. I will try and track down the exif data.

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT
Exposure: 0.017 sec (1/60)
Aperture: f/36
Focal Length: 80 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: 0/2 EV
Flash: Flash did not fire

I didnt know the kit lens could hit f36

But to possibly explain your hypothesis...

It was a really hot backyard burn. There would be tips from head to toe. At 10 feet the heat was almost unbearable.
