I picked up a cheap optical trigger off e-bay for my 430ex, plan is to trigger it of the pop up flash for a bit of extra flexibility.

It is a Seagull SKY-3, remote flash controller.

It does work, triggers 430ex when pop-up flash goes off, however the 430ex will only fire once. To make it fire again I need to turn the 430ex off and on again, or remove it from the optical trigger and replace it. It will not fire again using the test button either.

Question: Is this normal with these cheap triggers? Is there a way to fool the 430ex by taping some of the pins?

I am not concerned enough to send it back as it did not cost much and is more of an inconvenience than anything.

Its not the trigger. Its the flash, Canon designed the EX series of flashes so they don't work properly with 99% of optical triggers. On top of that the built in flash has a preflash that cant be disables so they dont work to trigger an optical slave very well to begin with.
