Best way is to use a card reader connected (or built in) directly to your PC. Connecting the camera with the provided cable is significantly slower

A fire wire card reader would be your best choice, I made the mistake of buying one local and all they had was usb2, now I have to do it again.

Actually the bus speed of your PC makes more diff. than anything else. Keep in mind that the card it's self can only transfer so fast. Just like it can only write so fast from the camera.:) As an example, my PC card reader on USB2 will transfer a 2gig ultra two card fully loaded in less than 3 minutes, yet a 1gig standard card will take almost 4 minutes on the same reader.

I believe that USB 2.0 is slightly faster than Firewire.

Depends on which version of Firewire. USB2.0 is theoretically faster than Firewire 400 (though I hear in practice, Firewire 400 is faster). Firewire 800 is MUCH faster than USB2.0.

Firewire or USB, it doesn't matter much.
Just use a card reader and keep the camera out of the equation.

I didn't and it fried the digital board.
Not a Canon I hasten to add.

Like Cameron said, I don't think it matters much if it's USB2 or firewire, so long as you get a decent reader.

The first thing to do is to study your computer and see what kind of ports are available. For example, if you have Firewire ports open, then get a Firewire card reader. If you have USB2.0 ports available then go that way.

My computer has only USB1.1, so my card reader matches that.

By the way, there are USB ports that are directly off the USB controller, and then there are other USB ports that have already gone through 4:1 conversion. Direct ports tend to be better. Then later in the game I discovered that one of my USB ports was effectively dead, so I use one of the other five that are good.

well burst rate of USB2 is faster than firewire, but sustained rate is faster with firewire.
but most definitely get a card reader. if you computer only does USB1.1 then look into a PCI to USB2 card. provided you have a open PCI slot.
the PCI to USB card can be had for under 20 at newegg.com. and a card reader can be had for cheap as well.

i was amazed when i went 2.0 as compared to 1.1.
