I will be going to the ACC Championship on Sat in Tampa, I have the 70-200 IS f/4 with a 1.4 ext. My seats are near the lower level and the game is at 1pm.

Is it worth bringing the 70-200 f/4 since it's not the 2.8? I have never shot sports before and was wondering if I'll even be able to get a decent shot?

Thanks

are you sure you'll be able to get in the stadium with it? I haven't checked or anything, but high profile sporting events are usually pretty strict.

that said, aside from getting less background blur, what are you worried about not being able to do with the f/4L that you think you could do with the f/2.8L? It's going to be the middle of the afternoon so light won't be an issue unless the weather is horrible.

Thanks for getting back to me,

No I haven't checked to See if I can bring it in. Will do that this week. I don't go to sporting events to often so I have no Idea if you can or can't and the last time I went was at FedEx when VT played USC and I don't recall if anyone had cameras?

As for the f/4L, I wasn't sure? I looked at the long range forecast and it's calling for mostly cloudy. I was thinking if it was sunny I might be OK but wasn't sure about it if it ends up being overcast?

f/4 will be fine for cloudy weather.. You might have to bump the ISO up a little if it's really cloudy out there, but nothing crazy. I once shot in torrential rain with a 5.6 telephoto and only had to go to ISO1000, so even in the worst case you should be ok, even with the teleconverter.

now for range.. you said your seats are "near the lower level"? I'm not familiar with the stadium, but you know what the kind of reach you can get out of your 70-200..

Just looked on the website for the stadium and camera & lens have to be less than 12" so doesn't look like I will be bringing it but thanks for the help.

My 70-200mm f/4 IS is <8" long and my 40D is <4" long... I've brought them to several games.

How did you measure your XTi and 70-200?

I didn't, but figured with the 1.4xt on there it would be too long. Are you talking about Raymond James where you brought your camera?

Then keep the 1.4x in your pocket until you get inside. :)

The 1.4 TC is removeable and will fit nicely in your coat pocket.

I've never been to Raymond James stadium, but the tips I've posted for other stadiums still apply...
- print out the posted rules and bring them with you
- if you're bringing multiple lenses, have the smallest lens (e.g. your 50/1.4) mounted to the camera body when entering the stadium
- camera bags and backpacks are usually not allowed... I've found that the pouch in a hoodie sweatshirt works well for holding the 2nd longer lens

Thanks everyone,

I will try it and see how it goes, worst case I take it back to the truck. I don't see me wearing a hoodie sweat shirt in Tampa, long range was calling for mid 70's. I will probably have the wife keep it in her purse.

Thanks again,
Ross

IF you have to take to it back to your truck, make very sure no one is watching or following you. (ie: do not walk directly toward your vehicle). Otherwise you might be missing that equipment when the game is over.

Good luck trying to get your gear in.

Yeah good point, that would suck!

We lost to BC once already hope it doesn't happen again. I hope it's the same as last year and we go on to the Orange Bowl.......go Hokies!!
