I thought the hawk was going to fly off as I got closer, but it seemed pre-occupied with something else and let me get a lot closer than I usually get....

You know the expression "Hawkeye".
Most hawks like this have vision that is 4 to 8 times sharper than humans.

Thanks for the comments! Not long after I snapped this pic I stopped by the wildlife refuge visitor center on my way home and was able to make a reservation for an open raptor blind for tomorrow morning. This will be my first 'blind' experience, I'm told it isn't the most active of the blinds in the refuges but what the heck, I'm happy to be getting out!!

thats an awesome shot. I saw an american eagle in alaska but before i could wip out the camera it had lifted off, hunting something on the ground (most likely a small rodent i guess)

cool shot, i cant wait till i can find one of these in the wild.i wonder if they have blinds in michigan for photography. i will have to do some research.
