View Full Version : A Year In Photos

elfy
30th of November 2008 (Sun), 06:35
So I thought I'd have a go at one of those project 365 things. You know, the ones where you have to take a photo every day for a year? I've no idea whether I'll be able to keep it going but I'm going to have a bash at it, it can only be good for my photography, right? Anyway, I've set up a website where I'll be posting my images every day so if you feel like it, feel free to add it to your favourites and check back on it from January. Thanks guys.

Good luck with it. The first few weeks are easy, its the next few months that are the killer. If you survive the first few months you'll finish.
Best of British to you :)

Thanks, I appreciate it. Like I said, whether I'll actually manage it or not I don't know but I'll have a go!

Haha! That would be the easiest one to keep I suppose. :D

I've put up today's photo.

If anyone happens to have a look at the site could you tell me a couple of things? Firstly, when you go into the album for January, is the first photo showing up? Also, are the pages loading really slowly for everyone else cause they are for me.

Cheers guys.

Well, I'm still going strong. Haven't got as many landscape images as I thought I would by this stage but hey, it's winter in Scotland which means it's cold and dark when I get home from work. Just means I have to get more creative indoors.

I haven't actually asked yet, but what does everyone think of the site? Is there anything you think I should change about it?

You could tell us if that abstract is a bunch of straws with a light being shone through them towards the camera....

It looks fine ATM. Some rather boring shots, some exceptional shots too.

Perhaps the title pics could be made smaller, it takes up a lot of the page's real estate which means the user is forced to scroll to get to the meat of the site. (imagine someone using an 800x600 res for this page!!)

Also, the comments are in reverse order. If you could fix that up easily it would be worth doing....

Carry on !!

Thanks for your input man. Yeah, I know some shots are better than others. Some days I don't really feel like it and that probably shows in the images. As a matter of interest which did you like and dislike?

I think I'm going to change the title picture, I'll probably do that tonight after work. As for the comments, I don't think I can change that unfortunately. It's done on webs.com and it's a template. There are certain things you can change about the layout etc but I don't think I can alter the comments. I'll have another look later though.

Thanks for looking and taking the time to comment.

So far -great job!
If everyone of your 365 was a great shot I think you would not be doing this right. Trying out a new idea every single day is going to produce some great work and some really unremarkable images too.
Stick with it, you have passed every attempt I have. Now I am thinking I should start too...

Really enjoyed looking through your set so far and good to see your still going strong a month in. I tried this once and didn't even get into month two but from your site I'm thinking you'll go the distance.

Great job and I'm looking forward to checking out some more :)

I'm finding that, as I'm only posting one photo per day I'm sometimes having some left over that I should be displaying somewhere. Also, I have photos from before I started the project that I want to show too. So, with this in mind, rather than have galleries all over the website, I've set up a separate site for these. There's a link on my homepage for anyone who fancies a look, or you can just click here (http://elfyportfolio.webs.com/).

Cheers.

I've checked it out and it seems that I would have to change the title bar on all pages (it's a template on webs.com). Now, do you think this would be a better option than leaving it as it is?

elfy

Okay, I've made the title bar smaller on all pages. Is it any better?

Colin Morey
15th of March 2009 (Sun), 12:01
That's much better, the landscape ones are fine, however there's still a bit of scrolling for me on the portrait ones. (fwiw, I'm almost full screen at 1920x1200, so if I have to scroll, then most other viewers will also need to scroll). You could probably get away with dropping the font size of the navigation bar down a few points as well. You've also got a bit of a gap at the top of the page, above the masthead photo, that you could remove or shrink a bit without loosing anything.

elfy

Great work so far. I love the light trail pics. Is there a post here in POTN detailing how to do these? Or maybe you can explain your process? Thanks.

Well, they're really quite simple. It's just a matter of using a long exposure (I think mine were 30 seconds) and then using a flashlight to 'draw' the figures in mid-air. Any flashlight will do, as long as you can unscrew the end to reveal the bare bulb. Really, they are a simple case of trial and error, until you get one that you are happy with.

Wow, keep up the great work! I think I'd end up with about 300 shots of my feet. :)

Haha! Yeah, it's tempting sometimes to just do something easy like that!

The links below might help. This was the tutorial that first got me trying them, although I have kind of taken the idea a bit further than this goes, the basic principal is the same. I should point out that the inspiration for the ones on my site come from a guy called Michael Bosanko. Check out his site at www.michaelbosanko.com for some really awe inspiring efforts.

***Weekly Update***

Another week out the way, and I'm thinking I might actually finish this thing. Most people say that if you get past the first couple of months doing this then you'll probably finish so here's hoping.

A few landscape type shots this week, one of my injured dog and an unhealthy obsession with Star Wars. Just your average week really.

geo1976
13th of April 2009 (Mon), 15:34
Do you prepare in advance at all? Like, do you write down where you want to go each day of the week?

elfy

Do you prepare in advance at all? Like, do you write down where you want to go each day of the week?

Occasionally I have an idea for a photo that I might plan a few days in advance, if only to work it around my daily schedule. Like, I might want a sunset photo at a particular location so I have to plan it around anything else I might be doing that week. And tonight for example, I knew I had a meeting at seven o'clock so any landscapes or anything like that were probably not going to happen, so I had to get something while I was in the city centre this afternoon. But no, I don't have the week's photos planned ahead or anything like that. Quite often, I have no idea what I'm going to do and have to come up with something on the spur of the moment.

elfy
19th of April 2009 (Sun), 15:52
It's that time again!

Been off work this week so I've actually been mostly out and about taking photos. A few landscapes, a sleeping missus with the mutt, and a bit of commercial advertising photography for Jack Daniel's.

Lovely.

....aaaaaand another update.

Bit of a mix this week, a couple of still life/experimental type shots, a portrait (which I rarely do), a sunrise, a sunset and a shot of my own hand making the shape of a G chord on the guitar - which isn't an easy photo to take by the way!

Only the one landscape this week. Been going a bit mad with the still life shots instead. A couple of light trail ones and another couple of high speed, splashy type ones for today and yesterday.

Look, comment, ignore, abuse, whatever you feel like really.

Quite enjoyed the photos this week. Managed to get out and about quite a bit and got (in no particular order) some high speed water action, a shot of my old high school, a cool sculpture thing, a couple of horses, a mean and moody self-portrait and a weird advert-like, half photo, half line drawing Photoshopped effort of my compact camera.

Quite a varied week really.

And yet another pretty varied one this week. Couple of landscapes, one of next door's pup, a couple of myself (including one of my feet! Think I'm struggling for ideas?), one of my mate Marty painting a roof, one of the local pub and a Michael Jackson related effort.

Check it out. You know the drill.

Worth a look I reckon, so let me know if they're good, crap, or just....nothing.

A still-life product shot of my phone featured this week along with a high speed water balloon burst shot, some Photoshop trickery to give a static car shot a bit of movement, the neighbour's boxer pup Molly, a split-toning effect applied to another still-life and me as Elvis. Sound interesting? Have a look and see.

Another update I reckon. This time we have, in no particular order, a couple of still life shots, a couple of football related ones, a few days of me being obsessed with my new close-up filters, one of the new bridge in Glasgow and a shot of my mate Andy's ugly face.

This time we've had a couple of still life shots, a shot of me posing for the camera looking moody (I know, it's the only look I've got - I'm like that Zoolander fella!), a musical recommendation, the dog enjoying the sunrise (a favourite of the missus), one of Ibrox stadium for all the Rangers fans.....oh, and a bloody great spider.

It's more than capable of getting very nice shots although I do feel it's maybe time for me to upgrade now, even if my bank balance doesn't agree! I had a look at your thread detailing the offer you had and it sounds like a pretty good deal to me, so if you haven't already I would definitely consider taking it.

That's so inspiring! I've heard of many people doing 365-projects but yours, so far, seems to be the one nudging me to take it on. My friend who is looking to start in photography says he will do it starting 2010.

Thanks for sharing!

WOW!! Good work elfy! i've just sat and watched the whole album so far. You've got some stunning work there, even when you claim to have no inspiration your photos are fantastic.

Maybe i'll give it a try starting 2010 as well since i really need to improve my photography this looks like it has plenty of potential to help me out!

Thanks very much man! Yeah, give it a go. It can only improve your photography.

Anyways, it's been a while since I've updated you all. I won't sit and tell you everything I've been shooting, suffice to say that there's been the usual mixture of still-life, portraits, light trails and dogs!

Have a look and leave whatever comments you see fit.

I just started mine almost 2 weeks ago. Got 12 photos. 353 more to go! I believe it will really help me improve cause I have already tried to do a few things come back to my computer and realize it didn't turn out like I had envisioned. Than I come to this site and a couple others to learn tips and tricks to catching that shot to try next time. I normally wouldn't have even thought to take that first shot. Biggest thing I am scared of as I go forward is inspiration.

You will improve as a photographer while doing the 365 challenge there's no doubt. Some days it's rough, and some days you take a photo just so it counts but it's a really enjoyable experience that will make you think about your surroundings in a whole new way.
good luck!

Still life, landscapes, an abundance of the dog, discarded alcohol bottles and flaming guitars just about sums up the content since my last update.

Have a look if you so desire...

Well, that's the year complete! It's certainly been a challenge, but I've loved doing it. Like I said right at the start, some days have been more inspirational than others but, looking back over the year, there haven't been too many that I really can't stand to look at. Thanks to everyone who took the time to have a look over the course of the year. Feel free to pick out your favourite shot and email the date of it and your name to elfy32@gmail.com to be in with a chance of winning a free print. All entries should be in by 8:00pm UK time on Thursday the 7th of January.

Oh, and I'm up at ten to seven on New Year's Day to go and try to catch the first sunrise of the year. Should be a good way to start off 2010's project!

So what's the project for 2010? I'm half tempted to continue mine on, as whilst there have been some bad days, there have been some good ones.

Basically a continuation of 2009's project really. I'll keep it going but maybe concentrate on landscapes and portraits this time. Dunno really, maybe just see what happens. I know what you mean about good and bad days. Maybe if I keep at it there'll be less and less bad days and more good.

Alright guys?

Thought I'd post a wee update on the project. Since I was last on we've had a few still life shots, most notably a little cartoon type figure, the sunset over my local pub and me punching myself. I kid you not.

Yeah, I certainly will. There's not much to it really. Just need a tripod and a flashlight that you can unscrew the end of to reveal the bare bulb.

How's it going everyone?

Been a week or so since my last update. Since then we have had a couple of self portraits, a couple of dogs (one of which wasn't mine for a change!), some still life shots, some dinner being cooked and some wine being thrown around. Below is a taster, click on the photo to see the rest. As usual, all comments are welcomed.

So we've had a bit of a mixed bag since the last update. The return of the Mr. Potato Heads, a couple of shots of some Munchies (including an album cover recreation), the dog stalking her prey, a landscape which I needed for a competition I'm entering, a couple of self portraits, boobs...yes, boobs, my slippers, a bridge in Glasgow, and this still life from last night. As usual, comments and critique are always welcome. Click on the photo to go and see the rest of them.

Thanks very much, I really appreciate that.

Aaaaaaaand time for another update. What have you missed recently then? Well, in the last couple of weeks I have shot (in no particular order) another split personality/mirror reflection shot, one of my Dad, one of my mate and my uncle, my iPod, the dog with a massive bone, a pint of cider, a pawprint on a CD made of waterdrops (why wouldn't I shoot that?!), St. Mirren FC's former stadium which is in the process of being demolished, me doing the dishes, a wee ball in my front garden, this effort from last night and a few more before all of them.

As usual, feel free to leave your comments and critique. Click on the photo to go and see the rest.

I've had a very slight reworking of the website, mainly to do with the page layout when viewing photographs, adding a guestbook at the top menu bar and also a review of my print prices. It's a recession buster, all prices reduced!
