Slide show to MPEG

Is there a free or almost free software that would allow mw to create a slide show and save it in MPEG format?

Depends what you call "almost free". I use ProShow Gold which is about $30.00 US I think but if you googgle "photo slideshow" you'll find a heap. ProShow Gold is excellent btw.
