like the title says, I can pick up a rebel xt with kit lens brand new pretty cheap. Only problem is I enjoy taking macro shots, which I think I would have to buy a new lens for the xt for, also I use the video recording pretty often, I would have to buy a new bag, and get CF cards, but I would like to get into slr.
Do you think the picture quality is worth the switch?
Would I see any improvement on the quality, or do you think it is better to just wait till I can afford a better SLR straight up and have both?
I think I will wait, that way I can build on the slr as I get the money but still have the S5 when I do not have the right lens for the slr. This has been driving me xcrazy for a few days now...
Thanks

Wait until you can have both. When you get the XT (or better), get a fast lens ( 50 1.8 ) that will supplement your S5 capabilities. Try not to duplicate lenses for the XT that are only marginally better than the S5. As you build your lens collection you will eventually be able to stop using the S5. By then you'll probaly still hang onto it for traveling light and it won't have much resale value anyway.

so you don't thino i will see a significant enough difference in pic quality to warrent a trade off?

Well, within the capabilities of the XT's lens you'd see a difference, but you wouldn't have the telephoto or macro capabilities with the XT and kit lens that you do with the S5. And there's no video capability. But low light/high ISO and action shots (within the lens' range) will be immensely better. Pluses and minuses. You have to decide which features are more important to you - if what you're most concerned with photographing absolutely can't be done with one or the other of your camera choices, then you'll be better off with the one that does do what matters.

I'm waiting until I can get both (and probably more than the Canon Rebel series), you see comments on the Flickr S5 group (and here) from people that own both that you can't see much difference the pics. Apparently you need to go beyond the kit lens to get appreciable differences.

bingo. i'm an s5 user and i wouldn't jump for anything less than an xsi. the s5 with CHDK, simply put: owns. sure you might not get the speed of 3fps, but if you are seriously considering a dslr, don't skip out on an intermediate level camera, go for the XXD series and up. you'll find that you can enjoy your pictures alot more with a capable camera + a solid lens.

I think it's the noise I get with my S5 that bothers me so much, I am still undecided, and this is making it more dificult, I was pretty sure I was going to do this, but maybe I will just keep learning with the S5 for now...

in my experiences (motocross), there's been magazine quality (i'm told a couple covers as well) shots taken by the XT, BUT they all use "L" glass. And if you are thinking that the XT with kit lenses will cost alot, you can't afford L glass. I've taken some good shots with my old 75-300mm. but they are so soft on the 300mm side, that they are barely printable (needs to be bright out). They work though when there's enough light, as long as you arn't trying to sell them to a magazine, or want to blow them up very large. the 18-55 works also, but it has limitations as well.
IMO i'd stick with the S5IS until you have enough money to get at least a XTi, and build your glass as you can afford. The S5IS can take some really great photos from what i've seen. Very comparable to the XT on the lower focal length of the lens.

thanks all, I am going to keep the S5 for now, and continue to learn with it, and save up for a better DSLR...

smart move. that's my plan for now as well. hey mullhawk, you do have chdk running on your s5 right? it'll give you some more features that might keep you entertained until a dslr comes your way. check it out.

I'd trade, but for anything newer than the 350D.The Xti is not much more $$,but the AF is way better(as is the lcd, ergonomics, etc>)

well I could have gotten the 350D kit for $230 brand new from a brick and mortar retailer, I havn't seen an XTi come even close to that. I am going to hold out for at least the XSi anyway...

thee xt is a great camera and more than capable. Anyone who says they can tell the difference just by looking at photos is pulling your leg.

well that is good to hear, I ended up keeping the S5 and buying the XT, I figure it is good enough to learn on, and start building up my lenses and filters, so when I upgrade to a higher model I already have the accessories.
Looking forward to doing some shooting with it :D
