I worked the girls college basketball tournament the other night. I was there as a medic and not a photographer, so I asked for permission to shoot. After a little explanation as to why I wanted to (for practice), site management agreed. My partner and I were sitting at a table at the end of the court. I found that 70-200 on a 1.6 crop was a bit long on the near end of the court. It's probably ideal on a 1.3 crop. I've only shot kids basketball and college is a bit faster (read a lot faster). Anyway, here they are. These are SOOC with no noise program at all. I didn't have access to the stadium strobes, so these are at iso 1600/3200.

They called in a ringer.

Thanks for sharing. It shows me that with a 40D one still needs f/2.8, ISO 3200, and good lighting in order to get shutter speeds of 1/640th or better in a gym.

And at least the pep band showed up to cheer the ladies on.

The pep band at UC is funny. They like to heckle the opposing team from start to finish. I doubt you'll find lighting this good in a high school gym. The 5/3rd Arena is equipped with strobes, but I know I'd be pressing my luck to ask to use them.
