I am new to wedding photgraphy and wondering what everyone thought of the new Canon 55mm-250mm for weddings?

That would probably be my LAST choice for shooting a wedding. If that was the only lens I had, I would NOT be shooting a wedding.

All that did was tell the OP that they were considering a crappy lens for a wedding...why not share what you WOULD use as well:rolleyes:

i would say that its not really comfortable focal length to shoot a wedding... i would recommend 17-55 2.8 IS! since im assuming you have a cropped body.
if the price tag on the 17-55 is too high, i would look into aftermarket alternatives. tamron 17-50 2.8 is a great lens for the third of the price.
i would say a budget wedding kit would be a tamron 17-50 and a 50mm 1.8 + 430ex flash... you can literally shoot the whole wedding with those...
if you're not on the tight budget i'd go for a 17-55 IS and 85 1.8

Fair enough.... I use the 70-200mm f/4 IS paired with my 580EXII (as well as all the other gear in my signature)

Yeah I've already got the 580EX speedlite and am about 99% sure i'm going with the 70-200mm lens along with what I already have. Thank you all for your input.

I use the 17-55, 85 1.2L and the 70-200 2.8L mainly also use some prime wide angles for mood and church shots as well as 100 2.8 Macro for different set up and novelty shots. If I had to use just one I would use the 17-55 believe or not its sharp and flexible.

I'm also curious about what lens to use.. especially for larger groups of say 8 or more..
I currently use my 17-85 for group portraits, and am not very satisfied.. I'm assuming the 17-55 has a larger aperature? I will have to research that one.

The 17-55 is a 2.8 with IS it's a great wedding event lens.

Why you need larger aperture for group shots, particulary with 8 or more folks?

I guess I don't need a larger aperture.. I think I've figured out, (or have been told) that I just need flash!

yeah, but the 17-55 will be sharper than the 17-85. Really, for weddings you need fast lenses. Yes, for the group shots you need lights and more dof, but often these can be done outside. I would look into whatever lenses you can afford that are f/2.8 or faster.
the 2 lenses that are the most popular on crop bodies are the 17-55 and the 70-200 f/2.8 IS.

One lens I've used in several weddings is the 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS. Maybe it's just my copy, but the results have been as good as any I've had with the 70-200 f4 (non-IS). That and the aforementioned Tamron 17-50 have served me well.

The EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, is the way to go, you can't beat it from inside the church without flash, bright sunlight outside back to evening party with flash, you only need one main lens and this is it.

I think that this lens will only give you a headache for wedding photography as you will probably find that it not fast enough for the environment of most weddings.
Here is what I would recommend:
70-200L 2.8 IS. If your budget can't go that route right now I would go for a 85mm 1.8 and a 50mm 1.4
You are going to need decent fast glass for weddings. If you are shooting with a crop sensor then the 85 1.8 might be just fine.
