View Full Version : How to pitch event photography idea

There is a casino in my area that hosts many concerts. As of now they don't have an in-house photographer documenting the concerts. I would like to approach the casino in hopes of striking some kind of agreement. Primarily, I seek more opportunities and material for my portfolio. Secondarily, I imagine if pitched correctly, this could generate a few dollars for myself. (the photos could be used for marketing, archival purposes, web galleries, prints to sell to guests, etc?)
What is the best way to proceed? What things should I be taking into account? Has anyone already walked down this road?

To use the photos in some of the commercial ways you suggest, you'll definitely need signed model releases from each of the performers and from any other key, recognizable individuals shown in the images. This isn't necessarily an obstacle, just something you'll need to plan for.
The performers themselves may have an interest in using some of your photos, too.

Mike I would go to the casino manager and just say I would love to shoot your next concert with the idea of showing you the value in hiring me to do all your concerts.
By the way my wife is from Powers Lake ND and I have been to the Mandan Casino.

Mike-
Casinos have many rules concerning cameras and Security is the tightest anywhere. Even as a contractor, you will also probably have to get a license from the state Gaming Commission. A casino may even require a work for hire situation were you will not get portfolio rights. If the casino is part of a national chain, the rules will get even more difficult.
I work for occasionally for casinos in Detroit and they are the most complicated clients, but pay my top rates. Besides concert photography, I would prepare a portfolio of pictures for other uses-advertising, events, and executive portraits.
Good Luck-

These are great responses. I'm taking all information into account as I prepare to contact the Casino. Any further advice from anyone is much appreciated. Thanks, Mike.

Nick,
Small world. I actually live in Bismarck, but was schooled in Mandan. It's good to see a fellow Bismarck resident on here. Have you checked out bismanphoto.com?
