Hi

A question for you , I have a a Tamron 28-75 F2.8 and a Canon 17-40 F4 L, and I am struggling in Low light conditions and having to resort to Flash.
Yesterday I took Pictures of a Bride and Groom in a Hotel where all the wall were dark wood cladded, cielings had dark wooden beams etc etc, a nightmare, so out came the flashgun.

I tried with my 10D to shoot at 800 without flash and it turned out OK but a bit yellowy.

My question is what faster lens would I be better off getting, I only need it for occassional shooting as most of my work is in the summer at the moment.
I was thinking of a 50mm 1.4. Is it really noticably faster?, or is there a better lens out there on the market.

Budget around £300, $500?

I have the Tamron and the 50 1.4, and the Canon is noticably faster. It's usable from f2.0 onwards whereas the tamron is only really sharp from f4.0 onwards. 7Dayshop.com have them for £219 at the moment.

Gary.

i would go with the 50mm1.4.
The reason for the yellow @ 800 on your 10d maybe due to white balance shooting under artificial light.
Did you shot in RAW if so - you should be able to adjust the colour temp/white balance there

No I Shoot JPEG for the speed. Ok so If I change the WB for indoor photography at ISO 800 is Tungsten the best setting to use?

if you do a lot of weddings - you could try out various settings at the event before hand maybe. On some cameras you can actually set a custom WB.

dpp set the cam to custom white balance, grab a coffee filter put it over the lens and point it at the light source, take a picture, then go to menu > set custom white balance and select that image, and press set :D perfect white balance everytime

Thats the custom white balance symbol btw, i was going mad at my 20D until i realised that K is colour temperature selector and not custom white balance lol

why " grab a coffee filter"
The filters I have are a brown colour.

No! Don't grab a brown filter. That would do some very strange things to your white balance.

so a white filter pointed at the light source will give an accurate reading.
I''m a little confused about that - but must try it
so next shopping trip white coffee filters
