I'd like to include video with my still shots and thought I'd buy a Canon SLR with video capabilities but there's no such camera at this time. I've even thought of buying a Canon HR 100, HR10 or an HR11 camcorder but I don't know how the still photo shots come out!..

Canon does have a S5IS point and shoot camera that does video and photos with no interuption but I don't like the photo quality.

I really should have more patience and wait until sometime next year when Canon will probably come out with an SLR with video capabilites.

In the meantime, does anyone know if Canon's camcorders can take excellent still shots?

thanks

Generally speaking, without some serious post production tweaks (De-Interlacing, Upscaling, etc) you do not get good stills from a traditional dedicated video camera.

Have you looked at the EOS 5DMkII? In addition to shooting 21Mp stills, it shoots full-res 1080p HD from which you can pull pretty decent stills that would be fine printed at 4x6 (and maybe even 8x10 if shooting conditions are optimal...)

Canon camcorders do not take good still photographs. Canon 5D MkII SLR apparently takes reasonably good video though

Video cameras take horrible photos, regardless of brand. If you want video to go with your still photography, rather than the other way around, definitely go 5D MkII.

Camcorder can not do good still photo in this moment, even the Canon XL H1. The still photos quality can not compare with a 200 $ PS camera.

But the Canon 5D MkII is a digital SLR camera with additional Full HD video. And the Full HD is outstanding. Only that it can not seamless records up to a hour. 12 Minutes or 4GB at a time.
