That is a VERY hard question to answer. The best camera for one person might not meet the need/wants of another. What type of photography are you planing to use the new camera for?

It seems like I read you could get the old Rebel for about that much.

for £400 you can get a number of cameras
what hve you had in the past
do you know what are you after
Is £400 the limit.
If you want a good compact then the Canon Pro1 or the Nikon 8800 are good cameras - I have a pro1 and a mate has the 8800 - if you want to go down the DSLR path then wait a few weeks and watch the 300D drop in price as the 350D hits the streets - the 350D is advertised @

i think you get lots more for your $ in USA - i only know UK prices, but from what i have seen £ = $ on this sort of stuff

Yea I would agree, provided you'll actually take the time to learn it's features rather than shooting in auto mode all the time. Since the XT hit shelves, the old rebel is at it's most expensive 799$ in best buys around here, but places like adorama.com, you can get it down to about 699 for the kit.

Buy a 300D kit or wait until you save up a bit more for the 350D XT kit.

If it were me I would look at a second hand 10D and get some glass to go with it.

I'd look at a used 10D or even D60 and then get some goods to go with it. You can always upgrade your body in the future...but its hard to use a camera to its full potential when you just have one $100 lens that has bad focusing, fuzzy edges, and is slower than grandma on her walker.
If I were you, (which I was about a year ago) I would look into an old camera (I got a D30) and then get some good lenses. Maybe check out a canon 50mm and a nice sigma zoom.
That way you get the goods of a Digital SLR (a 10D or D60 is way better than any point and shoot no matter HOW MANY pixels it has in my opinion)
And in the future if...er I mean when...you feel the need to dump $3000...you'll be ready :)
