I have a powershot pro1 and recently bought a 20 d my question is: is there a way to leave the lcd on while shooting? sorry for the stupidity of the question but I have yet to find this info in the manual

Not a stupid question at all. To answer your question, though, the 20D does not have a live preview via the LCD. It took some getting used to for me as well when I got my DRebel.

Not a stupid question, but, no the LCD on the 20D is for review purposes only.

The reason there is no live LCD preview is beause of the mirror being in the way on a DSLR. I believe that the Olumpus E Volt by virtue of its modified viewing system does.

yeah, all SLRs are built this way, it's just the nature of the way they work. You get to view directly through the lens (whereas on other P&S cameras you're looking kind of beside the lens) so you get a more accurate view of what you're photographing.

I was kind of against it at first, since I was used to my G3. After a while, though, you start to notice it feels more natural (heck, before digital, they always had to do it even if it was a P&S camera) and you quickly realize that tracking moving objects or people is much easier while looking through the viewfinder.

I made a post almost exactly like this a few months ago. Amazing what you can find in the instruction book :)

The 20Da is another SLR that has a live preview mode where you can manually focus while looking at the LCD, but this special edition body is only intended for astrophotography. My Nikon Coolpix 5700 always went through the sensor to one if it's two LCDs, the EVF viewfinder or the LCD on the body. I really liked that because you could get all kinds of info displayed right in the viewfinder rather than just the one-liner which is missing a lot of important stuff, like on the 20D where the ISO setting is not displayed.

I think we'll start seeing more dSLRs with a live LCD preview option and EVF viewfinders, including through the sensor autofocus mode, maybe as custom functions or something for special applications.

The LCD is for review purposes only, unfortunately.

The viewfinder is your friend. Learn to trust it (and the histogram).

Any more info on this, how much more does it cost?

So this 20Da is not meant for general photography?

I'm happy to look through the lens to be honest! It was weird at first because I did lots of shooting with my old olympus point and shoot. Now, It feels normal again to shoot while looking through the lens.

Another point, saves a ton of battery time when there is no live preview via the LCD.

So this 20Da is not meant for general photography? It's made primarily for astrophotography. The IR filter is removed, so for general use you'd have to have a front IR cut filter on all your lenses.

Here's some info (http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/news/articles/story_2550.html)

The LCD on the Pro 1 is better than the view screen on the 20D. Also the view screen on the 20D lies . . . if you are used to looking at the Pro 1. You will soon know what I am saying, if you do not already.

Learn to trust the view finder as noted above.
